Bruins Battle to 10-10 Tie in Utah Finale
April 08, 2023 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ No. 22 UCLA and Utah battled to a 10-10 tie over 11 innings on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The game was called after four hours and 30 minutes due to a travel curfew.
The game was a back-and-forth affair all day, with the two teams trading plenty of crooked numbers in the middle innings before settling into a bullpen duel late.
UCLA (19-8-1, 8-5-1 Pac-12) held leads of 6-3, 9-7, and 10-9 but saw Utah (11-18-1, 3-11-1) fight back each time. Neither team was able to score in the final three innings before the game was called.
Six Bruins had multiple hits on the afternoon, including two-hit days from each of the bottom-four batters in the order. Freshman second baseman Jarrod Hocking had a double and a triple, the first two extra-base hits of his career.
Freshman right-hander Cody Delvecchio was a standout on the mound for UCLA, pitching the final four innings of theย game without allowing a run. The Utes mustered just one hit, a single, over the course of his outing.
After falling behind 3-0 early, UCLA took its first lead of the game with a five-spot in the fourth. All five of the runs in that go-ahead rally came with two outs, as the Bruins strung together four consecutive RBI hits.
Junior right fielder JonJon Vaughns brought in the first run of the inning with a solid base hit to left, plating Malakhi Knight, who had opened the inning with a bunt single.
The next batter, junior left fielder Carson Yates, tied the game up with a shift-beating line drive to center field. Vaughns was able to score from first base on the play, bringing the score to 3-3.
UCLA got a break to take the lead on the next play, as a Jarrod Hocking fly ball to right-center got lost in the sun and went for a go-ahead RBI triple. Graduate third baseman Knox Loposer capped the inning's scoring with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
Utah put together a four-spot in the top of the sixth, but the Bruins responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to re-take the lead. Loposer knocked in the first run of that rally with an RBI double into the left-center gap, and Duce Gourson brought in two more with a grounder back up the middle.
The seventh saw UCLA score for the fourth consecutive inning, as Hocking drove a double into the right-center field gap to plate Carson Yates.
Utah was led by DH Landon Frei (3-6, two RBIs), right fielder Kaden Carpenter (3-6), and shortstop Matt Flaharty (2-4, three RBIs)
Sophomore righty Alonzo Tredwell drew the start for UCLA, surrendering three runs over five innings.
The Coto de Caza, Calif. native started off his afternoon by striking out the side in the first, went 1-2-3 in the third, and then delivered an eight-pitch shutdown inning in the fifth after UCLA had taken the lead.
UCLA returns to action on Tuesday, making the short trip to Malibu for a 3:00 p.m. contest at Pepperdine. That game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
