The Week In Reviewย ย  ย
UCLA went an unbeaten 3-0-1 last week, downing LBSU in a road midweek before winning a league series at home over the weekend against Utah:
  • UCLA outlasted Long Beach State for a 4-3 win in 13 innings on Tuesday night at Blair Field. The Bruins were trailing 3-1 and down to their last out in the ninth inning when Duce Gourson took Dalton Ponce deep for a game-tying two-run home run. The teams battled to a deadlock until UCLA manufactured a single run in the 13th โ€“ Darius Perry drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sac bunt, and later scored on a sac fly โ€“ to take its first lead of the game. Luke Jewett got the win after a masterful relief effort, closing the game by going a career-long 5 1/3 innings without allowing a run. His stiffest test came in the bottom of the 13th after allowing a leadoff double, but he got the next three batters in a row to strand the game-tying run. As a whole, Bruin relievers closed the game by getting 27 consecutive outs without allowing a run, the equivalent of a full nine-inning game.
  • A pair of early multi-run rallies proved to be more than enough offense for Kelly Austin, who led UCLA to a 5-3 win over Utah in Thursday's series opener. Austin set career highs in innings (7.0) and strikeouts (11), becoming the first Bruin pitcher to record that many Ks in a game this year. He went nine-up, nine-down to start the game, and allowed just a single the rest of the way after Utah got to him for two runs in the fourth. UCLA went ahead for good in the first after stringing together four consecutive singles for two runs. The Bruins added three in the third after Duce Gourson and Cody Schrier led off that frame with doubles. Cody Delvecchio went 1-2-3 in the ninth for his first-career save.
  • Jake Brooks led a combined 12-inning shutout as UCLA recorded a 1-0 walk-off win to clinch the series on Friday. JonJon Vaughns had the game-winning hit, shooting an opposite-field single to left with the bases loaded and nobody out in the 12th. UCLA had previously juiced the bags on a Keenan Proctor bunt single, a mis-played sac bunt, and an intentional walk. Brooks went six-plus scoreless for UCLA, and Cody Delvecchio, Luke Jewett, and Charles Harrison chipped in two scoreless relief innings apiece. It was UCLA's first walk-off win of the year.ย
  • UCLA and Utah battled to a 10-10 tie in Saturday's series finale, as the game was called after 11 innings and four-and-a-half hours due to a travel curfew. The game was a back-and-forth affair, as the teams traded the lead and crooked numbers multiple times over the middle inings. It settled into a bullpen duel late, with neither team getting on the board from the ninth inning on. Six Bruins had multiple hits, including two-hit days for each of the bottom-four batters in the lineup. Jarrod Hocking had a double and triple for the first two extra-base hits of his career. Cody Delvecchio fired four scoreless relief innings to lead UCLA on the mound.ย
  • For the weekend, UCLA out-scored Utah 16-13 and had the edge in batting (.274-.221) and ERA (2.53-4.20)
  • Saturday marked UCLA's first tie since Apr. 29, 2014 at UC Santa Barbara (game called after 12 innings due to darkness with the score tied, 5-5)
  • Duce Gourson (.375/.444/.688, 3 XBH, 4 R) and Cody Delvecchio (4 app, 8 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 7 K) were nominated for Pac-12 Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
In The Pollsย ย  ย
UCLA entered the week ranked in three of the five major national polls, checking in as high as No. 19 (USA TODAY Coaches Poll) while also appearing at No. 21 (NCBWA) and No. 22 22 (D1Baseball, NCBWA). The Bruins were unranked in the Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball polls.

Last Time Out Against the Wavesย ย  ย
UCLA capped off an unbeaten first week of the season with an 11-2 win over Pepperdine on Apr. 21 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins scored seven runs in the first inning to establish control, a rally which was capped off by an opposite-field two-run homer from JonJon Vaughns. UCLA allowed a run in just two of nine defensive innings, answering back to score in the bottom half both times. Seven pitchers saw the mound for UCLA, as Chris Aldrich (six-up, six-down in 2 IP) earned the win and freshman righty Michael Barnett (2 IP, 1 ER, 4 K) looked solid in his first collegiate start.ย

Last Year Against Pepperdineย ย  ย
UCLA split a pair of midweeks against Pepperdine last year, dropping a 7-5 result at home on Feb. 22 before returning the favor with a 9-7 victory in Malibu on Apr. 12. The game-winning run was scored in the ninth inning in both contests.
  • Feb. 22, 2022 in brief: A trio of then-freshman pitchers โ€” Ethan Flanagan (8 Ks in 3.2 IP), Alonzo Tredwell (7 Ks in 2.2 IP), and Luke Jewett (2 Ks in 1.2 IP) โ€” combined to strike out 17 batters, but Pepperdine rallied for six runs in the ninth inning to claim a 7-5 win at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins, trailing 7-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth, rallied for a pair of runs to make it a two-run game but couldn't complete the comeback.ย
  • Apr. 12, 2022 in brief: UCLA posted three-spots in the eighth and ninth innings to claim a come-from-behind 9-7 win at Malibu. The victory marked career win No. 700 for John Savage. The four-hour, 10-minute game featured plenty of drama, with five ties and four lead changes. UCLA had 15 hits as a team, none more important than a go-ahead two-run homer from Michael Curialle in the ninth.ย
