Men's Tennis Drops 4-2 Decision at No. 24 Stanford

April 08, 2023 | Men's Tennis

STANFORD, Calif. โ€“ The UCLA men's tennis team was bested by No. 24 Stanford in a 4-2 result Saturday afternoon at Taube Family Tennis Center.

The Bruins (9-7, 1-3 Pac-12) collected the doubles point and later added to their tally when Timothy Li prevailed on the singles courts. The Cardinal (12-7, 3-2) controlled the top four singles courts, however, with Max Basing, Aryan Chaudhary, Arthur Fery and clincher Neel Rajesh ultimately victorious.

The combination of Jeffrey Fradkin and Aadarsh Tripathi got UCLA off on the right foot in doubles play, taking the first four games and six of seven total opposite Anders Matta and Neel Rajesh on Court 3. On the top court, Li and Giacomo Revelli earned a break of serve out of the gate against Max Basing and Arthur Fery and used that en route to a deciding 6-4 result over Basing and Fery.

No. 16 Basing bounced back in singles play, defeating Revelli 6-2, 6-3 to pull Stanford level. No. 9 Fery added another win on Court 1, holding off Patrick Zahraj in their second set for a 6-1, 7-5 showing. Chaudhary then got past Tripathi 6-4, 6-4 on Court 3, giving the Cardinal a 3-1 lead.

The Bruins cut into the deficit when Li dealt Isaac Gorelik a 7-5, 6-4 loss on Court 6. The singles victory represents the first of Li's career in dual-match play and capped a two-win day for the junior.

Rajesh came out on top of a first-set tiebreaker with Gianluca Ballotta and went on record a deciding 7-6(1), 6-2 win on Court 4. The day's final match between Stefan Leustian of UCLA and Filip Kolasinski, left unfinished, was in a third set.

The Bruins return home and continue Pac-12 play Friday, April 14 versus Washington. First serve from Los Angeles Tennis Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT.
