Bruins Fall in Oregon State Rubber Match

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA baseball team absorbed a 21-5ย loss to Oregon State in a Sunday rubber match at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Bruins (26-21-1, 11-14-1 Pac-12) were in it for most of the game, with the two teams tied at 3-3 after five innings, but OSU (36-15, 18-12) separated by scoring in each of their final four offensive innings, including a trio of multi-run rallies.
Leadoff hitter Travis Bazzana led the Beavers with a 5-7, five-RBI performance. The second baseman dropped three bunt singles in the game, stole his 33rd base of the season, and hit a grand slam to cap an eight-run OSU ninth.
Center fielder Micah McDowell (3-6, three RBIs) and left fielder Mason Guerra (3-6, two doubles, four RBIs) also had big days for the visitors.
Sophomore shortstop Duce Gourson led the Bruins offensively, going 2-2 with a home run and reaching base four times.
Freshman left fielder Jarrod Hocking added a two-run double in the third inning to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Senior DH Josh Hahn followed with a run-scoring single to extend his own hitting streak to a team-high 10 games.
Left-hander Ethan Flanagan was the Bruins' standout on the mound, drawing the start and allowing just two earned over five innings.
The sophomore southpaw โ who matched a career-high in innings and set a season-high with six strikeouts โ settled down after a somewhat rocky start to the game, retiring 11 of the final 12 batters he faced starting in the second inning. Over his final three frames, just one batter reached against him, on a two-out walk in the fourth. Flanagan responded by fanning the next batter on four pitches, striking out the side in that frame.
UCLA concludes its regular season schedule next week, traveling to Tempe for three-game series at Arizona State starting on Thursday night. That set will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. ย
