The Week In Reviewย ย ย
UCLA went 2-2 last week, topping Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday and dropping two of three to No. 15 Oregon State:
UCLA trails the all-time series against ASU by a margin of 84-120, including a 25-26 mark under head coach John Savage. The Bruins have had the upper hand in recent years however, winning five straight and six of the last seven series against the Sun Devils, accruing a 15-6 record over that time. The Bruins have swept ASU in back-to-back seasons, after neither team was able to secure a sweep from 2011-21.
Last Year Against the Sun Devilsย ย ย
UCLA swept a three-game series with the Sun Devils at Jackie Robinson Stadium (Apr. 29 - May 1, 2022):
Active Bruins with strong career numbers against the Sun Devils include: Luke Jewett (3.2 IP, 0 R in two apps), Darius Perry (4-12, 2 2Bs, 6 RBIs in 3 GP), and Carson Yates (6-11, 3 XBH, 4 RBIs in 3 GP).ย
Controlling the Zoneย ย ย
So far this season, UCLA has ranked among the best in nation in drawing walks on the offensive end while limiting free passes on the mound. The Bruins have a plus-97 walk differential this season (252 drawn, 155 issued), good for 12th in the country. UCLA's 155 walks issued are the eighth-fewest in the country.ย
Notes on Projected Startersย ย ย
To this point in the season, UCLA ranks near the top nationally in a number of statistics on both sides of the ball:
UCLA's loss on Mar. 31 to WSU was a rarity, as it marked the first time this season the Bruins lost a game in which they scored first (they had gone 12-0 in such games to that point). Overall this year, UCLA is out-scoring its oponents 33-19 in the first inning of games. The Bruins have gone 11-1 this year when plating a run(s) in the first inning.ย
Familiar Faces Out of the 'Penย ย ย
UCLA's Cody Delvecchio enters the weekend with the second-most pitching appearances in the country at 33. The freshman righty has allowed a run in just seven of those 33 appearances, and had a 0.74 season ERA through his first 28 games. Chris Aldrich (28 appearances, 18th) has also seen plenty of work out of the bullpen.ย
Homerin' Holmanย ย ย
Sophomore first baseman Jack Holman hit a home run in four straight games from May 5-9, making him the first Bruin to homer in four consecutive games this millennium. The last Bruin with such a streak was Bill Scott, who homered in a school-record seven straight games in 1999. Some UCLA sluggers with three-game homer streaks in the 21st century include Chase Utley, Garrett Atkins, and Michael Toglia. Holman has a team-high 12 HRs on the year, the most single-season bombs by a Bruin since Michael Toglia had 17 in 2019.
Testing Dariusย ย ย
UCLA catcher Darius Perry enters the week with by far the most runners caught stealing (18) of any catcher in the Pac-12, four more than runner-up Caleb Lomavita (California). Perry's 44% runners caught stealing rate (18-41) also leads the Pac. In fact, no other league backstop is above the 40% CS threshold. Perry has thrown out multiple would-be basestealers in four of UCLA's last six weekend series, including a career-high three in one game alone against USC on Apr. 22.ย
Four is the Magic Numberย ย ย
So far this season, four has been the magic number for Bruin pitchers in locking down wins. UCLA is 21-2 this year when allowing four runs or fewer, compared to a 5-19-1 mark in games allowing five or more.ย

The Week In Reviewย ย ย
UCLA went 2-2 last week, topping Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday and dropping two of three to No. 15 Oregon State:
- UCLA finished off its midweek slate with a 10-2 win over Cal State Fullerton last Tuesday. The Bruins got it done on both sides of the ball, scoring their most single-game runs in over a month while six pitchers combined to throw a three-hitter. The Bruins never trailed after opening the scoring with a six-run third, a rally highlighted by a grand slam from Jarrod Hocking. Jack Holman later homered, while Josh Hahn chipped in a two-run single in the seventh. All nine of UCLA's starters reached base, and five finished with multiple hits. Michael Barnett was UCLA's most-effective pitcher, drawing the start and going nine-up, nine-down over three innings. Finn McIlroy later retired eight in a row to pick up the win, and JonJon Vaughns tossed a scoreless seventh in his collegiate pitching debut.
- The Bruins opened the OSU series with a 12-5 win on Friday night. UCLA never trailed in the contest, going ahead 4-0 by the third and ultimately putting the game away with a six-run seventh inning. All nine spots in the order had a hit for the Bruins, with five notching multiple knocks. Jarrod Hocking and JonJon Vaughns hit key home runs to power the Bruins, the former making it 4-0 in the third and the latter sparking the game-winning six-spot. AJ Salgado added three singles in his first start since Mar. 17. Jake Brooks earned the win with a solid 5 2/3 inning start, and a trio of relievers combined to hold OSU scoreless the rest of the way.
- Kelly Austin fanned a career-high 13 batters, but OSU was able to even the series with a 6-4 Saturday win. The Beavers hit home runs in three consecutive innings starting in the fourth to go ahead for good, and the relief duo of Ben Ferrer and Ryan Brown held UCLA scoreless over the final five innings of the game. Jarrod Hocking homered for the third straight game and finished a triple short of the cycle to lead UCLA offensively. Austin became the first Bruin this year to strike out more than 11 batters, and he teamed with Michael Barnett (2 Ks in 3 hit-free relief innings) to match UCLA's single-game high for strikeouts this season with 15.ย
- OSU took a 21-5 decision in Sunday's rubber match. The game was fairly close early (it was tied 3-3 after five) but OSU took control of the game by scoring in each of its last four offensive innings, including a trio of crooked numbers. Duce Gourson paced the Bruins' bats, going 2-2 with a homer and reaching base four times. Ethan Flanagan settled down after a somewhat-rocky start, retiring 11 of the final 12 batters he faced and ending with a season-high six Ks.
- Game 1 โUCLA won the series opener over Arizona State in a rout, 19-2. Max Rajcic took a one-hitter into the ninth to lead the Bruins, while every starter had at least one hit. UCLA had a solid 6-0 lead after five innings, but put the game on ice with 13 runs in the sixth inning, one off the program record for single-inning runs. The Bruins went through the entire lineup twice in that inning, which featured seven UCLA hits as well as six walks and three ASU errors. Particular offensive standouts included Darius Perry (3-5, team-high four RBIs), Jake Palmer (3-4, three runs), and Michael Curialle (3-5, two RBIs, three runs). Rajcic faced the minimum through six innings, and set then-career bests in innings (8.1) and strikeouts (11; he had a 14-K game later in the year)
- Game 2 โ The Bruins came out on the right side of a chaotic sixth inning to claim a 7-5 win over ASU. Tied 2-2 after five, the Bruins commited a pair of errors as ASU went ahead with a three-spot in the top of the sixth. UCLA immediately struck back with a go-ahead four spot though, as Cody Schrier tied it up with a bases-loaded double before coming across himself for the game-winning run on a Jake Palmer double. UCLA's bullpen was pressed into duty early, and responded by allowing just two earned runs over 7 2/3 innings. Charles Harrison (4.1 IP, 1 ER) and Alonzo Tredwell (2.2 IP, 0 R) were especially impressive out of the pen.ย
- Game 3 โ UCLA finished off the sweep with a 16-5 Sunday win. The Bruins plated nine runs in the first before making an out, with Carson Yates providing an exclamation point to the rally with a grand slam that made it 9-0. Every Bruin starter had a hit in the contest, and the bullpen tossed five scoreless innings. Schrier (3-6) and Curialle (3-5) co-led the team in hits, with five Bruins notching multiple hits. Freshman righty James Hepp made his NCAA debut in the contest, tossing a scoreless fifth to pick up his first career win. Josh Hahn followed with a 1-2-3 sixth in his 2022 pitching debut, and Luke Jewett pitched the final three innings of the game to record his first career save.
- For the weekend... UCLA outscored ASU 42-14, had a combined .355/.449/.527 slash line, and a solid 3.33 team ERA
