The Week In Review
UCLA is 1-3 over its last four games, all on the road, dropping a series at No. 8 Stanford and a midweek at UC Irvine:
  • UCLA scored in each of its final three offensive innings, but saw a comeback bid come up agonizingly short in a 6-5 loss at Stanford on Friday. The Bruins put together two-spots in the seventh and eighth, scored another in the ninth, but left the game-tying run aboard in the ninth as the contest ended on a Jack Holman flyout to the track in dead center. Daylen Reyes went 3-5 to lead the Bruin bats.
  • The Bruins rebounded for a 9-6 win on Saturday, scoring in six separate frames and receiving a strong start from Kelly Austin, who matched a career-high with seven innings while allowing just one earned run. UCLA went ahead for good by the third inning, using a balanced attack and taking advantage of free passes โ€“ Stanford walked 12 batters and hit another โ€“ to keep the Cardinal at arm's length. Eight of UCLA's nine starters reached multiple times, and seven different Bruins had at least one RBI. Austin pitched out of a couple jams in the early portion of the game before settling into a dominant run down the stretch, ending his outing by retiring eight straight.
  • UCLA dropped a 10-7 decision in the rubber match, as Stanford's Alberto Rios hit a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning. The Bruins led for most of the game after scoring in four straight innings starting in the second, but the Cardinal chipped away at the lead before wresting the lead on the Rios slam. Duce Gourson (2-5, two RBIs), Darius Perry (2-5, HR), and Jarrod Hocking (3-5) were UCLA's top offensive producers.
  • The Bruins used seven pitchers in a 12-3 loss at UC Irvine on Tuesday. UCLA had 11 hits as a team โ€“ the squad's fourth game in a row with double-digit knocks โ€“ but couldn't string enough of them together, scoring in only two frames. UCI built a 4-0 lead by the third inning, and went on to score in each of its eight offensive innings. Hocking went 3-4 for UCLA to record his second consecutive three-hit game.
  • UCLA had double-digit hits in each of its four games last week, and for the week posted solid team numbers in batting (.289), OBP (.401), and stolen bases (4-4).
Sunday's Finale Moved Up to Noon
Sunday's series finale against Cal, originally scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT, has been moved up an hour to a 12:00 p.m. PT start, in order to avoid a potential travel conflict for Cal.

The All-Time Series Against California
UCLA owns a 187-182 record all-time against California, including a 31-22 mark under John Savage. The Bruins have won six of their last seven weekend series against the Golden Bears, with Cal's two-of-three performance at JRS in 2021 representing their only series win dating to 2017. Overall under Savage, UCLA has won 11 of 17 weekend sets against Cal. The teams split a pair of matchups at the inaugural Pac-12 Tournament in 2022.

Last Year Against Cal
UCLA and Cal played five times last year, with the Bruins taking two-of-three in Berkeley (Apr. 22-24, 2022) before splitting a pair of contests at the inaugural Pac-12 Tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz.:
  • Game 1 at Cal โ€” The Bruins dropped the Friday series opener by a score of 8-3, as Cal rode back-to-back-to-back solo homers in the bottom of the first to a win. Cal hit five home runs overall on the night. Cody Schrier and Michael Curialle each had multiple hits, and Kenny Oyama hit a solo home run, his second roundtripper of the season.
  • Game 2 at Cal โ€” UCLA evened the series with a comfortable 9-4 Saturday win. The Bruins scored in five of their first six offensive innings, including a trio of crooked numbers. UCLA totaled 19 hits on the night, one off its season-high, as seven Bruins collected multiple hits. Strong performances in particular came from Darius Perry (3-5, two doubles) and Kyle Karros (3-5, HR), who co-led the team with three RBIs. Cody Schrier added two doubles, and JonJon Vaughns hit a moon-shot solo home run as part of a productive sixth inning. Max Rajcic turned in a quality start (6 IP, 3 ER) to pick up the win.
  • Game 3 at Cal โ€” The Bruins clinched the series with a 6-3 Sunday win. UCLA fell behind 1-0 after one, but went on to score six consecutive runs to grab control of the game. Cal didn't make it close until a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Michael Curialle led the Bruins with a home run and a double. Kyle Karros and Cody Schrier both went 2-5 with a double and Carson Yates added a solo home run. Gage Jump gave up just two hits but fell one out short of qualifying for the win.
  • Of note, the team that scored first lost each game of the weekend series
  • Game 4 (May 25 at Scottsdale Stadium) โ€” The Bruins were limited to one run in a 4-1 tourney-opening loss to Cal. Kyle Karros went 3-3 with a walk and Darius Perry had two singles, but UCLA went 0-4 with RISP and left 10 runners on. Josh Hahn made his first-career start on the mound for UCLA. The game started at 10:18 p.m. local time and finished just short of 1:30 a.m. UCLA played its next game, against Washington, less than 12 hours later.
  • Game 5 (May 27 at Scottsdale Stadium) โ€” The Bruins emerged with a 9-7 triumph in a Friday re-match with Cal to reach the divisional final vs. Oregon State (Cal was eliminated). Trailing for much of the game, the Bruins rallied for two runs in the eighth to send it to extras, then won it with another two-spot in the tenth. Jake Saum, Daniel Colwell, and Luke Jewett combined to throw 6 2/3 relief innings without an earned run against.
Friendly Confines
The Bruins have posted a 17-4-1 record in home games to this point in the season, winning 13 consecutive contests at Jackie Robinson Stadium to open the campaign. UCLA has widely outperformed its opponents at JRS, slashing a collective .286/.398/.439 (compared to .237/.299/.349 for opponents) while posting a plus-77 run differential (159-82). On the pitching side, the Bruins have a 2.87 team ERA at Jackie (opponents: 6.93) with a 232-176 advantage in strikeouts. Four Bruins regulars are hitting over .300 in home games, with Kyle Karros (.412/.500/.588), Duce Gourson (.350/.475/.500), and Jack Holman (.324/.411/.608) proving especially-tough outs.

In The Polls
UCLA was unranked in the five major national polls on Monday for the second consecutive week. The Bruins had been ranked every week until falling out of the top-25 on Apr. 24. UCLA did receive votes in this week's USA TODAY Coaches Poll. The Bruins have been ranked as high as No. 7 this season.

Controlling the Zone
So far this season, UCLA has ranked among the best in nation in drawing walks on the offensive end while limiting free passes on the mound. The Bruins have a plus-101 walk differential this season (224 drawn, 123 issued), good for seventh in the country. There are just nine teams nationwide with a walk differential above the century mark. UCLA's 123 walks issued are the sixth-fewest in the country.
