Bruin Bats Limited in 9-2 Loss to Cal

May 06, 2023 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES – Senior right-hander Kelly Austin was solid over a career-long 7 1/3 innings, but UCLA couldn't muster enough offense in a 9-2 loss to California on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The result sealed a series win for Cal (20-23, 8-15 Pac-12), which never trailed on Saturday.

The Bruins (24-18-1, 10-11-1) hung around for most of the game, getting within two runs in the eighth, but the Golden Bears pulled way with a five-run fifth.

Sophomore first baseman Jack Holman homered for the second consecutive day to lead UCLA's bats. His solo shot to right-center made it 4-2 in the eighth, but that was as close as the Bruins would get.

Junior second baseman Daylen Reyes added a pair of knocks, including an RBI single in the seventh that got UCLA on the board.

Other than that, the Bruins were fairly snake-bitten on offense, hitting into a rally-killing double play in the first and flying out to the track with multiple runners on base to end both the third and fourth innings.

Austin took the loss for the Bruins, but was excellent outside a three-run second inning.

He got stronger as the game went along, allowing just two hits – both singles – after the third inning. The righty put up three consecutive zeroes, starting in the fourth, before making way for the bullpen after a one-out single in the eighth.

His 7 1/3 innings represented a new career-high, a week after he matched his previous career long with seven innings at Stanford. Austin struck out six on the day, against three walks.

Cal saw each of its nine offensive starters collect a hit, with eight driving in at least one run. The Golden Bears hit four home runs in the contest, including three in the ninth inning.

UCLA looks to salvage the series with Sunday's finale, which is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. PT start.
