June 25, 2023 | Women's Basketball
LJUBLJANA, Slovenia – For just the second time in Germany women's national basketball team history, the squad is headed back to the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Bruins Emily Bessoir and Lina Sontag helped propel their national team with the result at the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023. Bessoir averaged 7.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, a steal and 0.7 blocks per game in the European competition; the rising redshirt-junior played 27.8 minutes per game, which ranked third on the German squad. Sontag appeared in all seven games in Slovenia, playing 18 minutes per contest. The rising sophomore shot 40.7% from the field, averaging 4.6 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.
Germany and Serbia both took wins on the penultimate day of FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023 to finalize the European lineup for the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.
With four spots for the Road To Paris 2024 having already been confirmed in the wake of Thursday's quarterfinals when Spain, France, Belgium and Hungary were all victorious in the Slovenian capital, there were just two places still to be determined in the Classification Games for the OQTs.
Germany were first to punch their ticket after an extraordinary 71-69 overtime success against Czech Republic, heading back to the Olympic Qualifying Tournament for the first time since 1980.
