UCLA Soccer Teams Earn United Soccer Coaches Academic Awards

August 16, 2023 | Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer

LOS ANGELES – For the sixth consecutive year, both the UCLA men's and women's soccer programs have earned College Team Academic Awards from United Soccer coaches, it was announced on Wednesday.

UCLA was one of 181 schools, across all NCAA divisions, to have both their men's and women's teams recognized for the 2022-23 season.

The Bruin women have now earned the award in 12 consecutive seasons after posting a collective 3.27 GPA in 2022-23. It was also the fourth year in a row that the women recorded a team GPA north of 3.25. A program-record 18 players were named to the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll in 2022.

The Bruin men meanwhile posted a 3.40 GPA during the 2022-23 school year, earning the team academic award for a sixth straight year. UCLA has qualified for the award every year under fifth-year head coach Ryan Jorden. Nine UCLA men's soccer players were named to the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll last year, and Tommy Silva was a First Team Academic All-American.

The United Soccer Coaches awards are designed to annually celebrate the academic achievements of teams whose student-athletes collectively demonstrate a commitment to excellence in their studies over the course of a full academic year. To qualify for the award, teams must post a team grade point average of 3.00 or higher.

The UCLA women open their 2023 campaign by hosting Georgia on Thursday, Aug. 17 at 7:00 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Networks.

The men are scheduled to host one more preseason exhibition – Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. PT against CSU Bakersfield – before opening the regular season next week on the road at the Fairfield by Marriott Invitational hosted by James Madison.
