Late Penalty Kick Gives UCLA 2-1 Win Over Cal Poly

August 24, 2023 | Women's Soccer

LOS ANGELES โ€“ With time running down in a tie game, No. 1 UCLA scored the game-winner on a Sunshine Fontes penalty kick in the 89th minute to claim a 2-1 victory over Cal Poly on Thursday evening at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
ย
The Bruins (2-0) had dominated the run of play in the first half, taking a 1-0 lead on an Ally Cook header off a Quincy McMahon far post cross in the 28th minute, Cook's second goal in as many games. UCLA totaled 11 shots, five on goal, in the first half, while holding the Mustangs to zero shot attempts.ย
ย
However, Cal Poly (0-1-1) came out strong to start the second half, with Jessie Halladay getting free for a pair of shots. She also drew a foul just outside the box in the 48th minute, but her free kick was saved by UCLA goalkeeper Neeku Purcell. In the 53rd minute, the Mustangs made the Bruins pay on a defensive miscue, with Kate Reedy tying the score at 1-1.
ย
UCLA gained an advantage just three minutes later, though, when Mustang defender Bailey Bracha was sent off after her second yellow card, forcing Cal Poly to play with just 10 players. But the Bruins were denied on several chances until the 88:38 mark, when Lexi Wright was fouled in the box. Fontes, a graduate midfielder from Wahiawa, Hawaii, stepped up to the take the penalty and buried it for her first goal of the season and the 17th of her career.
ย
"What I told the group after is that a sign of a great team is you get results maybe when you don't play very well," said UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa. "We had a couple of players really step up and make a difference. Sunshine in that moment found her way, and I thought Lexi in the second half came in and made an immediate impact. We have the individuals to make a difference, but that's obviously that's not going to be good enough, so we hope to build on that and put in a better team performance."
ย
The Bruins outshot the Mustangs, 23-4 in the contest. Cal Poly goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel made eight saves, while Purcell had two for the Bruins. UCLA's next game will take place on Sunday, August 27th at UC Irvine's Anteater Stadium. The game will kick off at 6:30pm and broadcast live on ESPN+.
