Irvine, Calif. โ No. 1 UCLA scored two in the first half and two in the second to defeat UC Irvine at Anteater Stadium on Sunday evening.
Ally Cook scored her third goal in as many games to open the scoring at 17:12. Sunshine Fontes started the play with a throw-in from the right side that found Reilyn Turner's head. Turner popped it back to Cook inside the box, and the graduate forward from nearby Coto de Caza headed it beyond the reach of UC Irvine goalkeeper Glo Hinojosa and into the back of the net.
In the 18th minute, Turner doubled up the score with a skillful strike, collecting the ball at the top of the box, making a quick turn and curling a shot to the near post over an Anteater defender and Hinojosa. Turner's goal was her first of 2023 and the 33rd of her career.
Freshman Val Vargas closed out the scoring with her first career goal in the 86th minute, taking a pass from America Frias and drilling a long distance shot into the back of the net. Turner was also credited with an assist, her second of the game.
The Bruins will next play at BYU on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 7pm PT/8pm MT.
