Provo, Utah โ In front of a standing-room only crowd of over 5,200, No. 7 BYU handed No. 1 UCLA its first loss of the season, 3-1.

BYU sophomore Ellie Walbruch, who transferred from UCLA earlier in the year, recorded the game's first goal in the 25th minute and added an assist on the second by Rachel McCarthy in the 37th minute. The Bruins trimmed a 2-0 deficit in half in the 55th minute on a Reilyn Turner goal, but Erin Bailey scored an important add-on goal for the Cougars in the 79th minute.

UCLA (3-1) outshot BYU (5-0) in the first half, 13-6, but could only get off just two shots on goal. Sunshine Fontes had the Bruins' best look in the first half with a long-distance shot that was saved by BYU goalkeeper Savanna Mason in the 18th minute. Two minutes later, Bruin goalkeeper Neeku Purcell made a nice save on a Bella Folino shot.

Walbruch entered the game in the 24th minute and made an immediate impact against her former teammates. On her first touch of the game, she chipped a shot over the Bruin defense to break the scoreless tie and give UCLA its first deficit of the season. Walbruch played another key role in what proved to be the game-winning goal, sending forward a pass to McCarthy, who one-timed a long-distance rocket to the upper left corner.

The Bruins made adjustments in the second half and put themselves back in the game. Just after near-misses by Ally Cook and Emma Egizii, defender Ayo Oke made a big steal outside of the box and sent a pass into the box to Turner, who slotted it past Mason to cut the lead to 2-1 with 35 minutes to play.

BYU's win was its first-ever against a top-ranked team, and it stopped UCLA's winning streak at seven games.
