BIG WEST BATTLES ย
After going 2-0 against Big West teams Cal Poly and UC Irvine in Week 2, No. 4-ranked UCLA will take on another Big West pair in Week 4, hosting Long Beach State (4-2) on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 7pm and playing at CSUN (0-5-1) on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 4pm. ย ย ย ย ย
LAST TIME OUT ย ย
UCLA dropped its first contest of the 2023 season at No. 7 BYU on Aug. 31 by a 3-1 score. The Cougars, who leapfrogged into No. 1 in this week's national rankings after the win, scored two goals in the first half before a Reilyn Turner goal in the 55th minute cut the lead in half. The Bruins' attempts to tie came up short, and BYU scored an insurance goal in the 79th minute to put the game out of reach. ย ย ย ย ย ย ย
TURNING OVER THE RECORD BOOKSย
With her goal last week at BYU, Reilyn Turner moved into a tie for seventh on UCLA's career goals list with 33, matching Iris Mora (2002-05) and Tracey Milburn (1998-2000). Two more goals will put Turner into a tie for fifth place with Sarah-Gayle Swanson (2000-03) and Staci Duncan (1998-2001). Turner also ranks in UCLA's Top 10 for career game-winning goals with 13 (tied for ninth) and career hat tricks with two (tied for third). ย ย ย ย ย
ALLY IS COOKIN'ย
Forward Ally Cook has scored a goal in three of UCLA's first four games this season and leads the Bruins in scoring with three goals and seven points. The Coto de Caza, Calif. native has totaled eight goals as a Bruin since transferring from the University of Oregon in 2022. She scored 17 goals as a Duck, and her total of 25 career goals ranks second on the Bruin team behind only Reilyn Turner's 33 career goals. Cook was selected to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week after her week one performance and earned Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and College Soccer News Team of the Week honors after week two. ย ย ย ย
IN THE RANKINGS
UCLA dropped to No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches poll, marking the first time since Aug. 30, 2022 that the Bruins have not held the top spot. UCLA is ranked No. 6 by Top Drawer Soccer. ย ย
SCOUTING THE BEACH
Long Beach State enters the week 4-2, its only two losses coming to Top 15 programs in No. 15 Texas (4-3) and No. 11 BYU (2-0). The Beach are coming off a 2-0 weekend in which they beat 2022 NCAA Tournament participant Harvard, 3-2, and Fresno State, 1-0. Redshirt senior Elysia Laramie ranks fifth in the nation and first in the Big West Conference with 16 points on six goals and four assists. ย ย ย ย ย
THE SERIES WITH LONG BEACH STATE
UCLA holds a 8-1 all-time record against Long Beach State and has won the last five in the series, the last three coming by a 1-0 score. Long Beach State's lone win came at home in 2015, 1-0. The last time the two teams played was Aug. 29, 2021 in Westwood. The lone goal was scored in the 78th minute on a header by Mia Fishel from a Michaela Rosenbaum cross. UCLA outshoot Long Beach State in the game by a 16-2 margin. ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย
SCOUTING THE MATADORS
CSUN enters the week with a 0-5-1 record and faces Idaho on Thursday before hosting the Bruins. The Matadors have been shut out in each of their games this season. BRUINS TO WATCH
A total of four Bruins have been tabbed for the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Watch Lists - defender Lilly Reale, midfielders Sunshine Fontes and Ally Lemos, and forward Reilyn Turner. All four earned All-Pacific Region and All-Pac-12 honors a year ago. Reale was a second-team All-American and the winner of the Honda Sport Award. The Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and the College Cup's Most Outstanding Defensive Player led the UCLA defense to a 0.55 goals against average, UCLA lowest in eight years, and to a Pac-12-best 14 shutouts. Fontes led UCLA in scoring a year ago with 11 goals and 30 points. She also ranked second on the team in assists with eight, one behind Pac-12 leader Lemos, who was selected to the Top Drawer Soccer Freshman Best XI first team. Turner, the College Cup's Most Outstanding Offensive Player, tied for the team lead in goals scored with 11 last year and has posted 10 or more goals every season. WHAT'S NEW, BRU?ย
The Bruins welcome eight newcomers to the defending national championship squad. Joining the Bruins in 2023 are transfers Ayo Oke and Emily Pringle, early enrollee freshmen Taylor Cheatham and Milla Shafie and new freshmen Kirsten Crane, Maya Leoni, Sophie Reale and Val Vargas. Vargas, a starter on Mexico's Under-20 National Team, leads the new freshmen, along with Gatorade Massachusetts State Player of the Year Sophie Reale, the younger sister of UCLA starting defender Lilly Reale. ย ย ย ย ย
FOR LOVE OF COUNTRY
Several Bruins spent the offseason playing for their respective national teams in tournaments around the world. Vargas is one of three Mexican Under-20 National Team players on the Bruin squad, along with sophomores Bridgett Marin-Valencia and America Frias, who each played with Mexico at the 2022 FIFA Under-20 World Cup. Also playing in that 2022 Under-20 World Cup were Reale and Purcell. ย ย ย ย
