2022-23 In Review
UCLA recorded five top-5 team finishes in Kirakossian's first year as head coach. The season was highlighted by a t-5th mark at the highly competitive Southwestern Invitational where two Bruins – Pablo Ereño and Omar Morales – finished in the top 20.
Morales was the most impressive individual performer in Kirakossian's debut season. After finishing 89th in his first event of the season, Morales improved each tournament, culminating in the first medal of his collegiate career at the El Macero Classic.
Morales led UCLA with a 72.2 scoring average in 22 rounds and three top 20s last season. Ereño ranked second with a 72.3 average in 28 rounds, the most action by a Bruin golfer in 2022-23.
The sophomore An notched two top 20s in the his first fall season at the Folds of Honor Collegiate (t-19th, +4) and Blessings Collegiate Invitational (t-15th, +4).
Morales in the U.S. Open
Morales competed in his first major championship event this summer at the 123rd U.S. Open at hallowed Los Angeles Country Club (June 15-18). Morales, who hit the first tee shot of the tournament, sat atop the leader board at -3 after the turn in round one. Caddying for the Puebla, Mexico native was Kirakossian.
Morales earned his spot in the field by winning his qualifying round at one of the Bruins' home courses in Hillcrest Country Club with back-to-back 65s to finish -12.
Marked Improvement for Mason
Graduate student Mason Greene had his best season yet as a Bruin in 2022-23, recording a career-low 72.5 scoring average. Greene achieved his first top 20 since his freshman year in 2019-20 at the Lamkin San Diego Classic where he tied for 15th (-2). The performance marked his first under-par tournament finish since 2020.
Greene led UCLA with 10 under-par rounds and seven rounds in the 60s. The Orange Lutheran High School product set career-low single-round scores twice with a 68 and two 67s.
Freshmen Phenoms
Powell and Papayoanou, the two freshmen in UCLA's starting lineup next week, had stellar prep careers before arriving in Westwood this fall.
At Capistrano Valley Christian Schools, Powell was the 2023 CIF State Champion, shooting a -7, 66 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif. Powell also captured the 2023 CIF Southern Section Individual Regional title with a -7, 67. Papayoanou was a proven winner at The Woodlands High School (Texas), taking home medals in 10 Texas District 13-6A tournaments. In 2023, he was named the Texas Boys District Player of the Year after winning the individual and state championships. Other major victories for Papayoanou include the 2023 Insperity Invitational/Patrick Reed AJGA Junior Championship and Greater Houston City Amateur Championship.
