UCLA in the Mix After First Round at Southwestern Invitational

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – The UCLA men's golf team shot 4-under 280 in round one of the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club on Monday. The Bruins are three strokes back of first-place Texas Tech (-7, 277).
Leading UCLA on day one was freshman Luke Powell who posted his seventh sub-70 score of the season with a 4-under 67. Powell trails clubhouse leader Caden Fioroni from UNLV by five strokes. After shooting +2 through three, Powell settled in with a string of four birdies over his next six holes. Powell birdied twice on the back nine, including a tough 15-footer on a downslope on the par-4 18th.
Junior Omar Morales joined Powell in the red with a 1-under 70. Morales birdied two par-5s on the front nine and the par-3 10th. He is tied for 16th.
Freshman Luciano Conlan shot even-par 71 in his first round to put himself in a tie for 25th. His day was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 15th.
Alex Papayoanou recorded five birdies over his first 17 holes and was 2-under heading into 18 before he ended the day with a triple bogey to put him back at 1-over 72 (t-34th).
Junior Pablo Ereño opened the day double bogey-bogey-bogey-bogey, but on his final 13 holes shot 3-under. He finished round one at 2-over 73 in a tie for 44th.
