UCLA Blanks Northwestern, 1-0
October 10, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Evanston, Ill. — Maya Evans' steal and goal in the 40th minute was the difference in UCLA's 1-0 win at Northwestern. The Bruins earned their 11th shutout of the season, holding the Wildcats to zero shots in the first half and just four in the game.
The Bruins (11-2-2, 6-0-1 in the Big Ten) dominated the run of play in the first half, outshooting the Wildcats 10-0. Val Vargas had a free kick from 30 yards out glance off the crossbar in the third minute, and she chipped another free kick from just outside the box in the 15th minute that was saved by Northwestern goalkeeper Reiley Fitzpatrick. Evans put the Bruins ahead just before halftime, dispossessing a Northwestern player and firing a missile to the right post from 25 yards out for her first goal of the season.
Northwestern (5-7-3, 0-5-2) came into the second half more aggressive, taking the first two shots, one going off target and the second saved by Bruin goalkeeper Ryan Campbell. Jayden Perry broke up a third opportunity early in the half with a takeaway. Northwestern earned two late corner kicks with under five minutes to play, but Campbell skillfully nabbed both services in the box. The Wildcats had one last chance with 23 seconds remaining after a steal, but Megan Norkett's shot from the left side was saved by Campbell to end the tying threat.
Campbell earned her nation-leading 11th shutout of the season, tying her career high and moving into a tie for sixth on UCLA's single-season shutout list. She finished the game with two saves. Fitzpatrick had three for Northwestern.
The Bruins, who remain unbeaten in conference play and atop the league standings, conclude their road trip on Sunday, Oct. 13 at Illinois. The teams will play at 1pm CT/11am PT.
