No. 15 Men's Golf Heads North to The Preserve Golf Club
October 25, 2024 | Men's Golf
LOS ANGELES – The No. 15 UCLA men's golf team returns to action on Monday, competing at The Preserve Golf Club Collegiate, built within the The Santa Lucia Preserve in Carmel, Calif. The two-day tournament takes place on Monday, Oct. 28 and Tuesday, Oct. 29.
The two-day, 54-hole stroke play tournament will include 12 collegiate programs at The Preserve Golf Club (par 72, 7,138 yards). Live scoring will be available via GolfStat (link here).
UCLA's starting lineup in Carmel will include two seniors (Pablo Ereño, Omar Morales), one junior (Kyle An), one sophomore (Luke Powell) and one freshman (Baylor Larrabee). In addition, sophomore Alex Papayoanou will be competing as an individual.
"We finished second up at the Preserve last year, hosted by Cal Poly, and it's a really cool event that's out in a nature preserve," UCLA head coach Armen Kirakossian said. "The location is interesting because it's difficult to know where you stand in the tournament, since the cell reception is poor in that area. For us, you really just get immersed into playing golf and being in the tournament. Last year's tournament was a tough one to swallow, finishing second. We felt like we were playing well. We kind of stumbled on the last few holes and Cal had a good finish, and we didn't know that any of this was happening at the time. Then to come to find out, when we gathered at the leaderboard, we had missed on winning the tournament by a few shots."
The Bruins' trip to Carmel, Calif., comes just a little after one week since UCLA finished in second place at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational. UCLA had posted scores of 8-under 280 in rounds one and two, on Friday and Saturday, and 9-under 279 in Sunday's final round. The Bruins finished the invitational in Alpharetta, Ga., at 25-under 839, just three strokes behind tournament champion Duke (28-under 836).
This season's field of teams at The Preserve Golf Club Collegiate will include Cal Poly, California, Colorado State, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Oregon, Oregon State, San Diego State, UCLA and Utah. Earlier this week, UCLA moved into the No. 15 spot in the Scoreboard rankings, powered by Clippd. The Bruins are the second highest-rated Big Ten team, behind No. 12-ranked Illinois.
One year ago, the Bruins tied for second, shooting 16-under 848, to close their fall campaign at The Cal Poly Invitational at The Preserve Golf Club. Omar Morales finished as the tournament's runner-up at 9-under with scores of 70-68-69. UCLA owned a one-shot lead at 14-under after 36 holes before California stormed ahead in the third round with a 12-under 276 to win at 21-under. Morales birdied 16 times across three rounds and bogeyed just once in his final round. Also in the top 10 last season was Luke Powell, who tied for third at 8-under 208.
"Our guys are looking to go there and play well and hopefully come home with a win," Kirakossian said. "They all like the golf course. It's a cool piece of property, and it's a course that suits our team well. Knowing the course is advantageous. The greens there are pretty wicked. It's a unique tournament in that teammates play with each other, so Omar and Baylor will be playing in the same foursome together, and Pablo and Kyle will also be playing in the same foursome. It's a little bit of a unique twist to the format, but one that I actually really like. We're looking forward to having a good trip. It should be a lot of fun, and I'm looking for our guys to continue their good play and get us back into contention and hopefully punch our ticket for a win."
