UCLA Earns Four-Set Road Victory Over Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. โ The UCLA women's volleyball team picked up an important road victory over Illinois on Saturday night inside Huff Hall.

Set scores were 20-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-23.

The Bruins (13-14, 7-11) hit .309 as a team and received outstanding performances from Cheridyn Leverette and Anna Dodson who each finished with double-digit kills. The Fighting Illini (18-10, 10-8) were led by Raina Terry who posted 22 kills at a .333 clip. Laynie Smith also finished in double figures with 12 kills on the night.

Leverette registered a team-high 18 kills and two blocks to contribute 20 total points in the contest. The junior also collected eight digs on the defensive end, finishing just two short of a double-double.

Middle blocker Anna Dodson returned to the starting lineup and connected on 14 of her 18 swings to hit .611. She came up with four blocks to lead the UCLA defense.

Handing out 45 assists was setter Audrey Pak, who also snuffed out six digs. Peyton Dueck and Kat Lutz tallied double figures in the dig category, finishing with 12 and 11 digs respectively.

Grayce Olson and Kiki Horne delivered some crucial swings down the stretch and registered eight kills each.

Leverette was off to a blistering start, racking up eight kills in the first frame. Her impressive offensive display propelled UCLA to a three-point lead at the media timeout. However, Illinois made key defensive adjustments during the break, finding their rhythm and outscoring the Bruins 13-5 to clinch the opening set, 25-20. UCLA committed seven attack errors and had three misfires from the service line in the first set.

The Bruins answered back with a convincing victory in the second set to draw level in the match. Horne knocked down three consecutive kills to give UCLA an early advantage and L. Dodson followed with three of her own to extend the lead to six points. UCLA used a very efficient hitting percentage of .419, recording 17 kills with just four attack errors to secure a 25-17 win.

UCLA was strong on the defensive end in its set three victory, holding Illinois to a hitting percentage of .107. The Bruins kept Illinois out of system by serving effectively and dealing four aces in the frame. By winning 10 of the last 15 points, UCLA cruised to the 25-15 win.

The fourth set was fiercely contested with a total of 12 ties throughout the frame. The Bruins built an early lead, but the Fighting Illini managed a 4-0 run to thrust themselves out in front. Kate Duffey entered the contest and dealt her second ace of the contest and A. Dodson put down a powerful swing to even the score at 16-16. This proved to shift the momentum as Leverette sparked a 5-0 run with another ace to get the Bruins to set point. Illinois fended off three set points before a service error, one of six in the frame, clinched the four-set road victory for UCLA.

UCLA make its return to Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom on Nov. 27 to host Iowa and kickoff the final week of Big Ten action. The match will be available for viewing on B1G+ for the 7 p.m. (PT) first serve.
