November 03, 2024 | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The No. 25 UCLA men's soccer team fell to Washington 1-0 on senior day on Sunday afternoon at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Zach Ramsey of Washington scored the lone goal for the Huskies in the win.
Wyatt Nelson made multiple goal-stopping saves on Sunday and totaled four saves on the afternoon. Edrey Caceres led the Bruins' attack with two shots on goal.
In a game where the Bruins honored seven seniors, UCLA (6-5-5, 3-4-3 Big Ten) dominated possession for the majority of the game. But it was Washington (8-4-5, 4-3-3 Big Ten) who had the better chances in the opening half, and in the 14th minute, Nelson was called into action.
The sophomore from Seattle, Washington, kept the game scoreless with a diving stop to his left, parrying the shot by Peter Kingston of Washington wide of his post.
Neither team would have any clear-cut chances for the remainder of the half, and the Bruins and Huskies were knotted up at 0-0 heading into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Bruins continued to search for the opener but could not find a way through. Nelson came up big again the the 61st minute, this time diving at full stretch to deny Richie Aman of Washington, keeping the game scoreless.
Jose Contell came closest for the Bruins off a Caceres corner in the 77th minute as UCLA pushed for the game-opening goal, but his header flashed over the crossbar, and the game remained scoreless.
Unfortunately for the Bruins, a minute later in the 78th minute, Washington opened the scoring on a counter-attack to take a 1-0 lead courtesy of Zach Ramsey.
The Bruins were unable to find the equalizing goal, and fell 1-0.
Up Next: UCLA, the sixth seed in the Big Ten Tournament, will take on Maryland, the three seed on Thursday in Chicago, Illinois at 12:30 p.m. PT. The game will be played at SeatGeek Stadium.
