UCLA Sets Several Records at Amer Ari Invitational

WAIMEA, Hawaii – The UCLA men's golf team finished tied for eighth at 45-under 819 at the Amer Ari Invitational at Mauna Lani North Course on Saturday. The Bruins set the program record for 54-hole score in relation to par (-45), 18-hole score (268 in the third round) and 18-hole score in relation to par (-21).
UCLA finished 17 strokes behind tournament champion North Carolina who shot 68-under 796. Arizona State's Wenyi Ding was the tournament medalist, winning by nine strokes at 27-under (63-64-62). There were 20 teams and 124 total golfers competing in the field.
Four of the Bruins' five golfers shot under par for the tournament, led by freshman Luke Powell at 13-under (68-70-65). Powell finished tied for 19th for his fifth top 10 of the season. Juniors Omar Morales and Pablo Ereño both tied for 28th at 12-under. Morales (71-68-65) matched Powell with a 65 in his final round Saturday. He has now shot under par in 12 consecutive rounds.
Sophomore Kyle An tied for 55th at 7-under (72-67-70) and freshman Alex Papayoanou tied for 71st at 4-under (73-69-70).
UCLA returns to action Feb. 19-21 to compete at The Prestige hosted at PGA West Norman Course in La Quinta, Calif.
