MVB Opens MPSF Play with Sweep

The No. 4 UCLA men's volleyball team (10-3,1-0) opened Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play on Wednesday night in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom with a straight set win over No. 11 Pepperdine (9-3, 0-1). Scores of the match were 25-20, 25-20, 25-18. The same two teams will battle it out in Malibu on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Tonight's win was UCLA's 20th straight regular-season victory in MPSF play.
Alex Knight and Cooper Robinson led the attack with 10 kills each. The Bruins controlled the net and out blocked the Waves 13.0 to 3.0 on the night with Knight contributing six block assists and Andrew Rowan five. Merrick McHenry totaled 9 kills and two block assists. Ido David joined Knight and Rowan with two aces each.
Pepperdine moved out to a 4-7 edge to begin set one. A Guy Genis kill and a David ace keyed a 4-0 Bruin run to a 8-7 lead. The Waves came right back to go in front 10-12. A couple of Merrick McHenry kills tied the score at 13 and then 14-all. Robinson, Knight and Genis broke the tie with kills for a 17-14 lead. Knight added two more winners for 19-15. The Waves tallied the next two points, but kills from Knight and David helped UCLA go up 23-18. A Wave service error ended the set at 25-20.
UCLA enjoyed an 8-5 lead after back-to-back aces by Knight provided a spark in set two. The Waves cut the margin to 10-9. Kills from Knight and then Genis helped the Bruins take a 15-13 lead. Knight's swing made it 18-16. An ace from Rowan put the Bruins up 20-17. Robinson's spike and ace pushed the margin to 23-18. Knight added a another kill for 24-18 and McHenry finished off the set with a kill at 25-20.
Pepperdine opened up a 6-8 lead in set three. David's kill was followed by a Rowan ace to level the score at 11-all. David's second ace of the match moved UCLA in front 15-14. Consecutive blocks by Sean McQuiggan and Rowan put UCLA up 18-15. Robinson's tip kill made it 20-17. Two straight Pepperdine attack errors left UCLA up 23-17. Knight's ninth and tenth kills of the evening ended the frame at 25-18.
