No. 1 UCLA Advances to Semifinals with 11-5 Win Over No. 10 UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif.ย --ย Top-ranked UCLA (12-0) advanced to the semifinals of the Barbara Kalbus Invitationalย on Saturday (Feb. 24) morning with an 11-5 win over the hosts, No. 10 UC Irvine, at the Marian Bergeson Aquatic Complex at Corona del Mar High School. With the win, UCLA improved to 36-0ย all-time against the Anteaters.
UCLA had a total of nine different players score in the contest, paced by two goals each from sophomore Taylor Smith and senior Malia Allen.ย Smith and Allen each had an assist as well to pace the Bruins' offense with three points. Freshman Elektra Urbatsch scored the first goal of her collegiate career and added one assist to score two points. Also chipping in two points with one goal and one assist was sophomore Lily Gess and freshman Panni Szegedi.
Freshman Lauren Steele got the start in the cage and went the distance, tallying a career-high 21 saves and one steal while allowing five goals. It marked the most saves by a Bruin goalkeeper since Caitlin Dement registered 22 stops in an 8-3 win over UC Davis on Feb. 21, 2010.
The Bruins never trailed in the contest, winning the first quarter 3-2. UCLA shut the Anteaters out in the second period, 4-0, to take a 7-2 lead into the break. The Bruins won the third period, 2-1, to lead 9-3 heading into the final stanza. The two teams battled to a 2-2 draw in the fourth quarter to provide the 11-5 final.
UP NEXT: The Bruins will take on No. 4 Stanford in the semifinals today at 2:45 p.m. at Marian Bergeson Aquatic Complex in Newport Beach, Calif.
