No. 25 Men's Tennis Defeats UNLV 6-1

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's tennis team picked up its fifth win in a row Sunday afternoon, defeating UNLV 6-1 at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Spencer Johnson, Govind Nanda and Jorge Plans Gonzalez registered two-win days for the Bruins (5-2). Giacomo Revelli clinched the team victory, while Timothy Li came out on top of his singles match. Martin Jovenin was triumphant for the Rebels (5-4).
Doubles went the distance, coming down to extended play on Court 3. Jackson Atherton and Anton Ornberg of UNLV won the final six games on the top court, beating Li and Revelli by a 6-2 margin for the day's initial decision. Next to finish was Court 2, where the match stayed on serve until Nanda and Jeffrey Fradkin broke Taiyo Hirano and Illia Maksymchuk for 4-2. Two more breaks followed, then a hold by the Bruins for a 6-3 win. Then, with all eyes on the last court standing, Johnson and Plans Gonzalez never trailed in their tiebreaker against Aaron Bailey and Joseph Chen en route to a 7-2 result.
Johnson earned his sixth victory in as many tries to get UCLA off on the right foot in singles play. The freshman improved to 15-4 overall (6-1 in dual-match play) with his 6-3, 6-3 win versus Dusan Rsovac on Court 3. Li followed with a 6-2, 6-2 showing opposite Hirano on Court 6, notching his first singles win of the dual-match season.
Jovenin's 6-2, 6-2 victory against Fradkin on Court 5 put UNLV on the board, but Revelli clinched the decision moments later. Revelli got the better of Maksymchuk 6-3, 6-3 on Court 2. The run on wins continued on Court 1, where Nanda bested Ornberg 7-5, 6-2 for his third victory in a row.
The lone three-set affair came on Court 4, where Plans Gonzalez was outlasted by Bailey in a second-set tiebreaker, only to respond by taking the first four points of the subsequent 10-point super tiebreaker en route to the 10-5 difference. The overall score was 6-3, 6-7(8), 1-0(5).
Next up for the Bruins is a trip to La Jolla, Calif. for the 135th annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championship. Play begins Friday, March 1 and continues through Sunday, March 3. UCLA returns to dual-match action Thursday, March 7, when it welcomes UC Irvine to LATC for a 2 p.m. PT clash.
