UCLA Edged by Michigan, 4-3

March 01, 2024 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The UCLA baseball team was edged 4-3 by Michigan on a wet Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Right-hander Mitch Voit fired a complete game to lead the Wolverines (4-6) to the victory.

The Bruins (5-4) led for much of the night, but allowed three unearned runs under wet and slippery conditions during a seventh inning rally that proved to be decisive.

Senior DH Daylen Reyes (1-2) led the Bruins with two RBIs. However, UCLA totaled just four hits as a team.

UCLA starter Luke Jewett turned in arguably his best start of the year, allowing just one run and four hits over six innings despite throwing 28 pitches in the first.

After allowing a run by the third batter of the game, Jewett rebounded and held Michigan off the board for his final 5 2/3 frames. Just one of the final eight batters he faced in the game reached base, and that came on an error. Jewett finished his night by retiring four straight, including a quick 1-2-3 sixth inning.

Michigan opened the scoring with that single run in the first, but UCLA grabbed the lead with a two-spot in the second. Junior second baseman Duce Gourson and freshman third base Roch Cholowsky sparked that rally with back-to-back singles to open the frame, and both were eventually cashed in on an RBI groundout from junior first baseman Jack Holman and a sac fly from Reyes.

The decisive seventh inning โ€“ which took place under rainy conditions โ€“ started under inauspicious circumstances, as the first batter reached on a dropped third strike that got to the backstop. He was able to come around on an RBI groundout later in the inning to tie it up at 2-2. The next three batters went triple-error-triple โ€“ to bring in the go-ahead and game-winning runs.

UCLA looked to rally in the final third of the game but came up just short. Reyes got the Bruins back within one in the seventh after shooting a base hit to center to plate Cholowsky from second base. Schrier led off the ninth with a line-double over the Michigan left fielder's head, but he was ultimately stranded there.

Voit went the distance on just 96 pitches, allowing four hits, three runs (all earned), two walks, and three strikeouts.

The Bruins continue the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic weekend on Saturday, hosting San Diego at Jackie Robinson Stadium starting at 2 p.m. PT.
