Pitching Shines on Day One at Judi Garman Classic

March 01, 2024 | Softball

FULLERTON, Calif. – The No. 19 UCLA softball team's arms of Kaitlyn Terry and Taylor Tinsley allowed just one run as the Bruins split on day one of the Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field on Friday.

Terry picked up a shutout victory in the Bruins' (8-6) 10-0 mercy-rule win over Michigan in game one and Tinsley struck out seven in a 1-0 loss to No 13 Florida in game two.

Terry, a freshman left-handed pitcher, struck out six Wolverines (10-9) and gave up four hits and one walk. She has thrown 10.2 straight scoreless innings dating back to her relief appearance versus Illinois at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Feb. 24.

UCLA's bats totaled nine hits and walked six times. Sophomore Megan Grant opened the scoring with a two-run homer to center field, which was her first longball of the season. The Bruins scored their last eight runs in the final two innings of the ball game. In the fifth, Jordan Woolery singled with the bases loaded to plate Janelle Meoño. One batter later, Sharlize Palacios scored UCLA's fourth run of the game on a sacrifice lineout to center field.

In the sixth, Maya Brady scored a run with an RBI single into center field to plate Thessa Malau'ulu. Jadelyn Allchin recorded a sacrifice flyout in right field foul territory to stretch the UCLA lead to 6-0. A walk to Woolery put two runners on base for Grant to continue a two-out rally. The Aragon, Calif. native smacked her second RBI hit of the day with a single up the middle to score Brady and place the mercy-rule runner into scoring position for Palacios.

On a 1-0 count, Palacios smashed a three-run homer to center field to put the game into run rule territory in the sixth inning. It was Palacios' third home run in her last two games following her two-homer performances versus then-No. 5 Tennessee at the Mary Nutter last Sunday.

Terry sent Michigan down in order in the bottom half of the sixth to end the game. Her record moved to a perfect 3-0 and her earned run average plummeted to 2.57.

Florida scratched a run across in the first inning and that was all the run support the Gators (18-2) would need for their freshman ace Keagan Rothrock. Rothrock struck out five and allowed just two hits to the Bruins' batters.

The Gators scored their run on a solo shot by Skylar Wallace to right-center field. The homer came on the heels of a Florida runner caught stealing on a throw out from Sharlize Palacios behind the dish.

Tinsley got in a groove scattering seven strikeouts over the next five innings. Only two Gators reached scoring position in the remaining five frames.

UCLA's best chance to score came in the top of the seventh. Grant led off the inning with a towering fly ball to Florida left fielder who lost the ball in the sun. The ball skirted past Korbe Otis and Grant raced to second base for the double. A flyout by Palacios allowed Lauren Hatch – Grant's pinch runner – to tag up and advance to 60 feet away from home plate.

The next batter, Savannah Pola, hit a shallow flyout to Florida's Kendra Falby into center field. Falby gunned down Hatch who was attempting to tag up to the game, resulting in a double play to end the contest.

The Bruins are back in Fullerton, Calif. tomorrow for two more games. UCLA will play Weber State in its first game of the day at 12 p.m. (PT) and DePaul later in the afternoon at 2:30 p.m. (PT).
