Grant’s Grand Slam Fuels 6-3 Win Against Oregon
March 29, 2024 | Softball
LOS ANGELES – Megan Grant's fourth-inning grand slam provided a five-run cushion for the No. 14 UCLA softball team in its 6-3 victory over No. 24 Oregon at Easton Stadium Friday night.
The Bruins (20-8, 6-2 Pac-12) secured their second conference series win of the season with tonight's result. Sophomore Taylor Tinsley earned her eighth win of the season after turning in 4.0 solid innings and striking out three batters. Freshman Kaitlyn Terry proved effective in the final three innings of the game and picked up her first career save.
Grant's grand slam – the second of her career – came in a one-run ballgame after the Ducks (20-12, 7-4) cut into the Bruins' lead in the third inning on an RBI double by Ariel Carlson to left field.
UCLA loaded the bases in the fourth inning on a bloop single by slap hitter Janelle Meoño that fell in shallow left field, a full-count walk to Sharlize Palacios and a hit-by-pitch to Jordan Woolery. With two outs, Grant launched a no-doubter into the right field trees to clear the bases and extend the Bruins' lead to 6-1. The swing marked Grant's third home run of the season and her first since March 2. Grant now has two career grand slams (other: at Arizona on April 17, 2023).
The Bruins scored once in each of the first two innings. In the first, left fielder Jadelyn Allchin singled to right field in her first at-bat and stole second base to put herself into scoring position for Palacios. Palacios pounded a ball to the Ducks' third baseman that tipped off her mitt and into the outfield to score the first run of the game.
Thessa Malau'ulu hit a ball deep in the hole at shortstop for an infield single to leadoff the second inning. A double off the bat of Maya Brady put two Bruins in scoring position for Allchin who recorded her second hit of the game on another ball into right field, this time driving in a run. Allchin stole second base again during Palacios' at-bat, marking the first time this season a UCLA player has swiped multiple bases in a game.
Oregon threatened to score in the top of the fourth with a two-out rally that loaded the bases. KK Humphreys doubled and back-to-back walks brought up Kai Luschar who worked a full count. On the seventh pitch of her plate appearance, Tinsley induced a Luschar groundball to Seneca Curo at second base who flipped to Brady for the force out and end the inning.
The Ducks scored twice on three hits in the seventh inning and had the game-tying run reach the plate, but their comeback bid fell short after popping up to Malau'ulu at third base to end the game.
UCLA and Oregon close the series at Easton Stadium tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. (PT). The game is available for viewing on the Pac-12 Networks.
