MVB Clinches Regular Season MPSF Title

The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball team (21-4, 10-1) clinched the regular season Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) title with a sweep at Concordia-Irvine (6-17, 0-11) on Thursday night. Scores of the match were 25-12, 25-17, 25-15. The victory produced the third straight regular season MPSF crown for the Bruins and was the squad's tenth straight win on the season. The same two teams will conclude the regular season on Saturday night in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom at 7 p.m. on Senior Night. UCLA will be the No. 1 seed in next week's MPSF Tournament and receive a quarterfinal round bye.
The Bruins recorded their second-highest attack percentage of the season and best in MPSF action this season with a .515 mark for the match. Ethan Champlin led UCLA with 12 kills, his team-high 13th match in double-digit winners this season, and hit .455. Cooper Robinson added 10 kills, hitting .643, to go with a pair of aces for his 16th match in double-digit points. Merrick McHenry hit .500 with three kills which marked the 22nd match in a row the senior had hit at least .400. Andrew Rowan registered three aces for his 12th match this season with multiple service winners. Matthew Aziz tied Champlin for team-high assist honors with five.
UCLA moved out to a 5-2 lead to begin set one thanks in part to a couple of kills from Champlin. CUI closed to 7-5 before the Bruins put away four straight kills by Robinson, Champlin (two) and Ido David for an 11-5 edge. Blocks by Rowan / Sean McQuiggan made it 14-7 and then 17-8. McHenry's kill put UCLA's lead at 19-10. Three aces by Rowan around a CUI error extended the margin to 23-10. David's kill ended the set at 25-12.
McHenry opened set two with a pair of aces to key a 3-0 start. Champlin fired off an ace for a 6-2 lead. David's spike put UCLA ahead 9-5. McQuiggan's swing made it 12-8. Robinson and McHenry combined for a block and a 15-10 advantage. Kills by David and Robinson extended the gap to 17-11 and then 18-12. Champlin delivered a kill for 21-15. David tallied an ace for 22-15 and Robinson's swing ended the set at 25-17.
