Elise Wagle
No. 15 Women's Tennis Downs No. 7 Pepperdine After Late Wagle Win
April 11, 2024 | Women's Tennis
MALIBU, Calif. โ With the match time having just passed four hours, Elise Wagle of the 15th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team delivered the deciding point in a thrilling 4-3 victory against No. 7 Pepperdine Thursday at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
It was a big day for Wagle, who not only sealed the overall result in three sets, but helped take down the nation's second-ranked doubles team to clinch the day's first point. Kimmi Hance also notched a three-set win for the Bruins (15-4, 7-1 Pac-12), who have won 13 of their past 14 matches. Ahmani Guichard was also victorious in singles play for UCLA. The Waves (11-6, 2-0 WCC) swiftly inserted themselves back into the contest after Savannah Broadus prevailed and took a 3-2 thanks to the efforts of Nikki Redelijk and Janice Tjen.
The second-court combination of Hance and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer put on a commanding performance to start doubles play, taking down Redelijk and Vivian Yang by a 6-2 margin. Broadus and Tjen entered the day ranked second, undefeated in dual-match play and owners of a 23-1 overall record. Tian and Wagle, themselves ranked No. 36, were not fazed en route to a 6-3 victory that put the initial point on the Bruins' side of the scoreboard.
Pepperdine answered by taking four first sets. That quickly led to a 2-1 lead for the Waves, as No. 13 Broadus bested No. 68 Bianca Fernandez 6-2, 6-1 on Court 3 and No. 74 Redelijk dispatched Lutkemeyer by a 6-1, 6-3 count on 5.
The freshman Guichard rolled to an emphatic 6-2, 6-4 win opposite Jasmine Conway on Court 6, making the score level. Now with 16 total singles victories on the season, Guichard is tied for the team lead with Lutkemeyer.
In a rematch of the 2023 showdown that went to Tian in clinching fashion, No. 52 Tjen took the latest meeting 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2 on Court 1 to put Pepperdine one point away from the overall win.
The UCLA juniors would not go quietly, however, starting with No. 32 Hance. Tasked with overcome a lost first set versus No. 14 Lisa Zaar, she did just that. A break of serve was achieved by Hance following a 36-shot rally to complete her 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory on Court 2.
Wagle needed to come back on multiple occasions on Court 4, bouncing back from a lost first set and erasing two match points against No. 94 Anna Campana. Wagle ultimately seized a marathon second-set tiebreaker, but found herself down a break early in the third. She immediately turned that around, however, moving out to a 5-2 advantage and eventual 5-7, 7-6(7), 6-3 decision maker.
The Bruins return to Pac-12 play Saturday, when Oregon visits Los Angeles Tennis Center for Senior Day. The regular-season Los Angeles Tennis Center finale is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. PT, with senior festivities to take place prior to the start of action.
