UCLA Falls in Washington Rubber Match, 8-4
April 14, 2024 | Baseball
SEATTLE โ Freshman righty Landon Stump allowed just two hits over five-plus innings of one-run ball, but a big sixth inning doomed UCLA to an 8-4 loss to Washington on Sunday afternoon at Husky Ballpark.
Washington (11-17-1, 5-10 Pac-12) scored all eight of its runs during the sixth inning, with the biggest blow coming on a Cooper Whitton grand slam. The result clinched the series for the Huskies.
UCLA (13-20, 6-12) received solid contributions from Stump and freshman shortstop Roch Cholowsky, who finished a homer short of the cycle as part of a 3-4 effort. Junior second baseman Duce Gourson and freshman DH Roman Martin had two hits apiece.
Stump was near-unhittable in the early going, as he faced the minimum his first time through the order and didn't allow a hit until a leadoff single from Cam Clayton in the fifth. That stretch saw him go three-up, three-down in the first, third, and fourth innings.
The frosh righty departed the game after a leadoff single in the sixth, and Washington would go on to post an eight-spot against the UCLA bullpen. The Huskies had seven hits in the inning, and took advantage of a pair of UCLA errors.
UCLA had built a 4-0 lead through the first half of the game.
Patience played a key part in a score-opening two-spot in the second inning, as both AJ Salgado and Quintt Landis worked walks with the bases loaded to force in runs.
Cholowsky made it 3-0 an inning later, scorching a fly ball off the wall in center field for an RBI triple that plated junior first baseman Jack Holman.
Gourson singled to lead off the fifth, and later scored on a Mulivai Levu RBI groundout, to finish off UCLA's scoring account.
Each starter had exactly one hit for Washington. Clayton also worked a pair of walks to reach base a team-high three times. Whitton's sixth-inning slam was the team's lone extra-base in the game. The relief duo of Reilly McAdams and Grant Cunningham combined to keep UCLA off the board for the final 5 1/3 innings of the game, with the former receiving the win.
UCLA concludes a four-game road swing on Tuesday, heading up the 101-North to take on UC Santa Barbara starting at 4:35 p.m. PT.
