No. 9 Softball Drops Game Two to No. 19 Arizona, 8-4

April 27, 2024 | Softball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The No. 9 UCLA softball team fell 8-4 in game two of the series to No. 19 Arizona at Easton Stadium Saturday night.
ย
The Bruins (29-10, 13-4 Pac-12) collected five hits, including three which went for extra bases. UCLA starting pitcher Kaitlyn Terry surrendered eight earned runs on 13 hits in a complete-game effort versus the Wildcats (32-14-1, 13-10 Pac-12).
ย
Second baseman Allie Skaggs hit the first of Arizona's three homers โ€“ a three-run shot with two outs โ€“ to score the game's first runs in the top of the third inning.
ย
UCLA answered back in the bottom half of the third with a three-run homer of its own to tie up the game. A single by Megan Grant and a walk to Maya Brady brought Sharlize Palacios to the plate with two outs. On a 1-0 count, Palacios emptied the bases with a blast to right center. Palacios has now recorded a three-run homer in three of her last four games versus the Wildcats dating back to last year's season's series. The senior backstop is tied with Brady for the team lead in homers with 12.
ย
The Bruins continued the two-out rally on a single by Jadelyn Allchin up the middle. The next batter, sophomore Jordan Woolery, bounced a hot shot over the third base bag and into the corner for a go-ahead, RBI double to score Allchin and give UCLA a 4-3 lead.
ย
The Wildcats evened the score the next top half of the inning with a solo homer by catcher Emily Schepp. Arizona snatched the lead for good with another three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning, this time coming off the bat of left fielder Dakota Kennedy. Both of Arizona's three-run shots by Skaggs and Kennedy came with two outs in the inning.
ย
Arizona's pitchers walked Maya Brady twice, and on a 3-0 count in her third at-bat, hit her with a pitch. Wildcats' reliever Brooke Mannon earned her fifth win of the year.
ย
Taylor Stephens logged a pinch-hit double in the seventh inning.
ย
UCLA and Arizona square off in tomorrow's rubber match at Easton Stadium at 2 p.m. (PT). The Bruins will be honoring six seniors prior to first pitch: Jadelyn Allchin, Maya Brady, Thessa Malau'ulu, Janelle Meoño, Madison Pacini and Sharlize Palacios.
