Bruins Advance to NCAA Second Round, Defeat LSU 4-3

AUSTIN, Texas โ The UCLA men's tennis team earned a trip to the second round of the NCAA tournament on Friday afternoon after beatingย LSUย 4-3 in Austin, Texas. The Bruins will play the winner of No. 2 Texas and Sacramento State on Saturday at 2 p.m. PT.ย
With the match tied at 3-3, only Gianluca Ballotta on Court 5 remained for the Bruins (15-7). The sophomore took his first set 6-4 over LSU's (16-14) Chen Dong, and trailed 1-4 in the second set. Ballottaย claimed the final five games to clinch the match for the Bruins with a 6-4 win in his second set, earning UCLA a 4-3 win. ย
Friday's match was tight from the outset as two of the three doubles pairings went to a tiebreaker. LSU earned a 6-2 decision on court one before the Bruins bounced back on Court 2ย with a 7-6(2) win by Alexander Hoogmartens and Govind Nanda. UCLA's Timothy Li and Jeffrey Fradkin followed shortly to clinch the doubles point for the Bruins with a 7-6(3) win on Court 3, giving UCLA a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
In singles play, LSU earned the first three wins on Courts 2, 3 and 4ย to take a 3-1 lead before the Bruins stormed back. Nanda started the comeback with a straight-sets win on Court 1 over No. 107 Stefan Latinovic, 6-4, 6-4, getting the Bruins within a point of LSU at 3-2. The win was Nanda's fifth over a ranked opponent this season. ย
Jorge Plans Gonzlaez then tied the match at 3-3 with a dominant performance on Court 6. The senior from Barcelona, Spain, took the first set without dropping a game, 6-0, before earning the win with a 6-3 win in his second set.
Ballotta followed Plans Gonzalez with a win on Court 5 to clinch the match for the Bruins. The win on Friday moved UCLA to 7-0 all-time against the Tigers. ย ย ย
