Giron Wins Hall of Fame Open for First ATP Title

July 21, 2024 | Men's Tennis

NEWPORT, R.I. โ€“ Former UCLA men's tennis standout Marcos Giron, who won the 2014 NCAA singles championship as a collegian, claimed his first career ATP title Sunday at the Infosys Hall of Fame Open.

Giron bested 19-year-old Alex Michelsen, a fellow American, in the final. The second-seeded Giron prevailed 6-7(4), 6-3, 7-5 against the tournament's No. 3 seed. Michelsen held match point at 5-4, 40-30, but Giron powered back to take the final three games. The deciding point came by way of an ace.

The 30-year-old Giron had reached two ATP-level finals previously, including one in 2024. He had a runner-up finish to Tommy Paul of the United States earlier this year at the Dallas Open. Giron also fell short opposite American Brandon Nakashima at the 2022 San Diego Open.

En route to his maiden ATP crown, Giron won four matches in five days. He kicked off his run with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win versus France's Benoit Paire. Giron overcame a 4-6, 7-5, 1-4 deficit in that match. He followed by beating Alex Bolt of Australia 6-4, 6-1. In Saturday's semifinal round, Giron downed fourth-seeded American Christopher Eubanks 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Giron logged 13 total aces against Michelsen, including the clincher.

Giron will climb to a career-high No. 38 in the ATP singles rankings with his championship run. He will represent the United States at the Paris 2024 Olympics, starting later this month. It will be Giron's second time representing his home country, as he also participated in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
