No. 21 UCLA Draws With No. 18 JMU, 0-0
August 25, 2024 | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's soccer program kept a second consecutive clean sheet against a top-25 opponent on Sunday night, tying 0-0 with No. 18 James Madison University at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
"If you look at the other day against LMU, we dictated that game thoroughly," head coach Ryan Jorden said. "Today, I thought we controlled the game in a lot of ways, even without the ball. The moments that we did have the ball, we had spells that were very good, and so at the end of it, I'm really pleased with where we are at because I think we have exerted control on the two games. For us to have played two teams that were in the round of 16 and round of eight in the NCAA Tournament last year, and have two shutouts, a win and a tie, I don't think anyone is saying that is a bad weekend."
Statistically, for UCLA Edrey Caceres, Sveinn Hauksson, and Andre Ochoa all tallied two shots, while sophomore goalkeeper Wyatt Nelson produced three saves.
It was a defensive stalemate in the first half, with both squads looking for ways to find a way through the opposing defenses for the majority of the half. The Bruins tallied four shots in the half, while Nelson made two stops one in the eighth minute and one just before halftime.
The second 45 minutes was more frantic as both teams looked for the go-ahead goal. In the 50th minute Caceres, who scored twice in his Bruin debut in the 2-0 win over No. 11 LMU on Thursday, had his effort well saved by Sebastian Conlon in goal for JMU to keep things deadlocked at 0-0.
Later on in the second half, Hauksson had a great chance in the 65th minute to open the scoring. The UCLA newcomer sent a shot towards the bottom left corner after cutting inside onto his right foot, but Hauksson's shot was well saved by a diving Conlon in net for JMU.
The defense stood tall all night and Nelson was called into action again in the 75th minute. JMU's Jeffrey Aguilar had a chance on goal, but his shot was ultimately saved by Nelson, keeping the game tied a 0-0 with 15 minutes to go.
Two minutes later in the 77th minute the defense stood tall again, this time blocking multiple attempts at Nelson's net to keep the game scoreless.
Neither team could carve out a goal in the remaining minutes, and the game ended 0-0, earning UCLA its second shutout in two games to begin the season.
Up Next: UCLA continues its five-game homestand to begin the year and will take on No. 22 Portland on August 30 at 7 p.m. PT. The match will also be streamed on B1G+.
