Chiles Captures Floor Exercise Bronze Medal
August 05, 2024 | Gymnastics
Jordan Chiles earned her third career Olympic medal and first-ever individual medal, capturing the bronze medal on floor exercise with a score of 13.766.
ย
As the last competitor on the event, Chiles needed to beat the score of 13.700 by Romania's Ana Barbosu to win a medal. Chiles' combination of difficult tumbling, solid execution and her own personal flair brought her to an initial score of 13.666, .033 shy of a medal. However, Chiles' coaches submitted an inquiry on her score, believing she was not properly credited for her tour jeteยด full. Following the inquiry, Chiles' difficulty score was raised one-tenth from 5.8 to 5.9, moving her from fifth place into third place behind gold medal-winner Rebeca Andrade from Brazil (14.166) and silver medalist Simone Biles (14.133). ย
Chiles, who also won team gold in 2024 and team silver in 2020, becomes the most decorated Olympic gymnast in UCLA women's gymnastics history with three total medals. She also joins Madison Kocian (2016 uneven bars silver) as the only Bruin female gymnasts to win individual medals at an Olympic Games. Additionally, Chiles made NCAA history by becoming one of just three NCAA gymnasts on the women's side to win three or more Olympic medals, along with her 2024 teammates Suni Lee (Auburn) and Jade Carey (Oregon State).
ย
Chiles competed at UCLA between her two Olympic runs, joining the Bruins in 2022 and 2023 and winning the 2023 NCAA uneven bars and floor exercise titles. She earned nine career All-America honors, scored eight perfect 10s and earned 51 total victories during her two years in Westwood. She was also named the 2023 West Region Gymnast of the Year and the 2023 Sportswoman of the Year by College Gym News.
