September 09, 2024 | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The No. 6 UCLA men's soccer team earned their fourth shutout in five games to begin the season, drawing 0-0 with No. 3 Denver on Monday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
In the scoreless draw, a pair of Bruins started their first career games, as freshman Allan Legaspi and Shakir Noxin both earned the starting nod. Statistically, for UCLA (2-1-2), Andre Ochoa led the Bruins with two shots, while Sam Joseph made one save in goal. With the shutout Joseph earned his third clean sheet of the season. Four Pioneers had a shot for Denver (3-0-3), with only one coming on target.
"Denver is a really good team, they've played maybe the toughest schedule in the country to begin the year," head coach Ryan Jorden said. "I thought we didn't put ourselves in a lot of tough spots tonight. Barr one bad pass in the first half, I thought we controlled the game on both sides of the ball. I was really pleased with the fact that we earned our fourth shutout in five games to start the year."
Andre Ochoa created a half chance for himself in 18 yard box in the fourth minute, but Denver's defense was in good position and blocked it in behind for a corner.
Denver tallied the first shot on goal in the 26th minute but Sam Joseph in goal for the Bruins was able to stop it and keep the Pioneers off the scoreboard.
In the opening 45 minutes Denver held a 3-2 edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes, while Sam Bassett had the only shot on goal in the opening 45.
The second half was similar, with Ochoa creating another opportunity at the 58-minute mark. The senior from Anaheim, ran into the box and got onto the end of a cross from the right side, but his shot was right at the Denver goalkeeper, and the game remained tied 0-0.
In the 65th minute, Tamir Ratovitz created a chance for UCLA at the top of the box, but had his shot deflected off a defender before Isaac Nehme in goal for Denver pushed it wide of the post.
The game would remain scoreless the rest of the way and the Bruins earned the 0-0 result on Monday night.
Up Next: The Bruins take on No. 12 Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois on Friday for their first Big Ten game, as well as their first road game of the year.
