UCLA Falls to Michigan State, 1-0
September 27, 2024 | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Michigan State on Friday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. The Bruins tallied a total of 16 shots on the night but could not find the back of the net.
Freshman Artem Vovk led the Bruins (4-3-3, 1-2-1 Big Ten) with three shots, while Wyatt Nelson recorded three saves in goal. Jonathan Stout scored the lone goal of the evening for Michigan State (3-4-2, 2-1-0 Big Ten).
The Spartans got on the board early, courtesy of Stout in the second minute of the game. Michigan State got the ball into UCLA's box before Mohamed Saad ripped a shot toward the right corner of the goal, which Nelson parried away brilliantly. Unfortunately for the Bruins, the ball ricocheted back to Stout, who was crashing the box and headed it home to put the Spartans in front 1-0 just two minutes into the game.
UCLA chased the game from there as they tried to find the equalizer. Nikolai Rojel had a great chance in the fifth minute, but his header was sent just wide of the post and the Spartans remained up 1-0. Neither squad were able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the half and Michigan State took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Bruins dialed up the attack, taking 13 shots in the half as they looked to find the equalizing goal. Vovk and Andre Ochoa had great looks in the 50th minute blocked by the Spartans, who sat deep and defended their box well.
Two minutes later in the 52nd minute, Amjot Narang had arguably the best chance of the game for the Bruins. Off a Bruins corner the ball was recycled out to Ochoa who whipped in a dangerous cross which found the head of Narang. Narang's header looked destined for the bottom right corner before Zac Kelly in goal for the Spartans saved it and pushed the ball out for a corner, preserving Michigan State's 1-0 lead.
In the final half-hour of play, the Bruins chased the equalizing goal but could not find it despite a flurry of late chances, and fell to Michigan State 1-0.
Up Next: The Bruins hit the road for the second time in Big Ten Conference play and take on Penn State in Happy Valley on Friday, October 4th. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. PT.
