Men's Tennis Posts First Results of 2024-25

TULSA, Okla. โ The UCLA men's tennis team completed play at the ITA All-American Championships Thursday, as seven Bruins officially rang in the 2024-25 season.
Rudy Quan had a standout performance, advancing out of the singles qualifying draw. The freshman would pick up a win in the main draw. Four UCLA student-athletes, including Quan, logged victories against nationally-ranked foes.
Emon van Loben Sels turned in straight-set wins against Arthus de la Bassetiere of Rice and Luka Petrovic of Tulane. The Bruin also teamed with Spencer Johnson to take down Wissam Abderrahman and Romain Gales of Clemson 6-2, 6-1 in doubles prequalifying. No. 55 Johnson made his singles debut as a sophomore in the qualifying stage, besting No. 86 Oscar Pinto Sansano of Georgia 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
No. 96 Alexander Hoogmartens and No. 104 Aadarsh Tripathi suffered losses in qualifying, but bounced back in three-set consolation matches. Hoogmartens knocked off No. 51 Abderrahman 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 and Tripathi got the better of Pinto Sansano 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
No. 75 Quan's initial singles contest resulted in a 6-4, 6-2 decision over No. 88 Youcef Rihane of Florida State. It was more of the same in his second outing, as the Thousand Oaks, Calif. native overcame No. 54 Adit Sinha of Cornell 7-5, 6-0. In the main draw, Quan avenged Johnson's qualifying loss to No. 72 Aristotelis Thanos of Michigan State with a 6-3, 7-5 showing versus the Spartan. Quan's run would end in the next round, though, as he was outlasted by No. 15 Jay Friend of Arizona in three sets.
Quan and Tripathi advanced to the doubles qualifying stage, in which the pair downed No. 42 Nate Bonetto and Gabriele Brancatelli of Georgia Tech 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(2). The UCLA pair was ultimately felled by Florida State's 47th-ranked duo of Joshua Dous-Karpenschif and Erik Schiessl.
