Hance, Wagle Highlight Strong ITA All-Americans Performances
September 29, 2024 | Women's Tennis
CARY, N.C. – The UCLA women's tennis team kicked off the 2024-25 season with a number of impressive performances across nine days at Cary Tennis Park, host site of the ITA-America Championships.
The tandem of Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle shined brightest, making a run to the doubles championship match, earning an NCAA Championships spot in the process. Wins against nine nationally-ranked singles foes were recorded, while six ranked doubles pairs were taken down.
Hance and Wagle were responsible for four of the ranked doubles victories, including straight-set showings versus No. 17 Reece Carter/Alexia Jacobs of Washington in the quarterfinal round and No. 16 Jessica Alsola/Mao Mushika of California in the semifinals. The former put Hance and Wagle into November's NCAAs field.
No. 28 Ahmani Guichard and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer advanced out of the qualifying stage with two top-100 wins, while the freshman combination of Olivia Center and Kate Fakih eliminated No. 69 Heike Janse Van Vuuren and Gracie Mulville of Kansas in a super tiebreaker.
Center and Fakih also had strong singles debuts. Center reached qualifying with three triumphs and beat No. 95 Taylor Cataldi of Wisconsin once there. Fakih also got started in prequalifying and ultimately made the main draw, defeating three ranked counterparts.
Joining Fakih in the singles main draw were No. 17 Hance, No. 83 Lutkemeyer and No. 42 Bianca Fernandez. Hance took care of business against No. 64 Alexis Blokhina of Stanford and Fernandez overcame No. 35 Sophia Biolay of UCF. Lutkemeyer downed No. 54 Jacobs in consolation play after falling to the tournament's No. 2 seed.
