No. 10 Men's Golf Returns to Action at Sherwood Country Club
January 23, 2025 | Men's Golf
LOS ANGELES – The No. 10-ranked UCLA men's golf team returns to action next week, competing from Monday through Wednesday (Jan. 27-29) at the Southwestern Invitational in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
The three-day, 54-hole stroke play tournament will begin on Monday, Jan. 27, and is set to include 14 collegiate programs at Sherwood Country Club (par 71, 7076 yards). Live scoring will be available via Scoreboard (link here).
UCLA's starting lineup on Monday will include two seniors (Pablo Ereño, Omar Morales), one junior (Kyle An), one redshirt sophomore (Matt Yamin) and one freshman (Baylor Larrabee).
"We're really excited to get back into action, having ended our fall season on a high note with a win," UCLA head coach Armen Kirakossian said. "And then a couple of weeks prior to that, we had a second-place finish. We really felt like we had a lot of momentum in the fall. We took the team out to the desert for a team retreat earlier this month, so that we could be together and resume practicing, and that worked out very well. We've been back in town this week, doing qualifying, getting ready for the upcoming tournament at Sherwood. Our guys are eager to start and play some competition."
"I think that everyone is trying to build upon the momentum from our fall, but we also know that this is golf and every time that you tee it up, it's going to be hard. I know that we are looking forward to that challenge. Playing at Sherwood, this is about as near as a home event as we're going to get, seeing that Pepperdine is the host and the golf course is 40 minutes from campus. Our guys have seen this course a little bit but not a ton. I think that we feel comfortable when we're playing in L.A., or the L.A. area, so it should be a nice field for us. Guys should be ready to compete. We're excited to get out there."
This marks the Bruins' first competition in the 2025 calendar year after UCLA had a strong fall season with four competitions in September and October of 2024. UCLA concluded its fall schedule by winning the tournament title at The Preserve Golf Club Collegiate on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in Carmel, Calif. The Bruins compiled a final total of 23-under 841 at the 54-hole event and finished 10 strokes ahead of second-place San Diego State.
That tournament title marked UCLA's first team championship since winning the Lamkin San Diego Classic on March 10, 2021. In addition, that was UCLA's first team title of the Armen Kirakossian era.
UCLA's program last won the Southwestern Invitational in 2018, shooting 8-under 856 in a field of 15 total teams. The Bruins won that tournament title by a 20-stroke margin. Last season, UCLA tied for third place alongside San Diego State in the 13-team field (UCLA finished 9-under 843 in the three-day event).
