No. 1 Bruins Derail Boilermakers, 83-49, to Tie All-Time Best Start to Season

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No.1-ranked UCLA Women's Basketball team (16-0, 5-0 Big Ten) picked up its sixteenth-consecutive win of the year over Purdue at Mackey Arena on Tuesday evening. The final score was 83-49, and the Bruins' 16-0 start to the season ties the program's record for the best start to the season.
Junior Lauren Betts led the Bruins to their victory over Purdue (7-8, 0-4 Big Ten) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Her presence in the post contributed to UCLA outscoring Purdue 40-12 in the paint.
Three other Bruins finished in double figures. Timea Gardiner finished the game with 16 points on 4-5 3-point shooting. Janiah Barker added eleven points and four rebounds, and Kiki Rice finished with eleven points.
The Bruins started their dominance quickly, going on a 10-0 run at the beginning of the first quarter and forcing a timeout in the first two minutes of the game. The team's 29-point quarter highlighted its depth as seven players scored during the first frame. Junior Londynn Jones laced both of her three-point attempts to lead the quarter in scoring, and Gardiner finished the quarter with five. Rice, Angela Dugalić, and Betts added four points each. The Bruins were also effective on the defensive end, holding Purdue scoreless for the game's first three minutes. The Bruins led 29-13 at the end of the first.
UCLA continued to score effectively in the second quarter, shooting over 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from three. The team continued to find success through a group effort, and six players finished the first half with five or more points. Jones led the scoring in the second quarter as well, making her third three-point attempt of the evening. The team was also successful in distributing the ball, with seven players finishing the first half with an assist. UCLA's junior duo of Betts and Rice also showed their two-man game with a pass from Betts leading to a Euro-step basket from Rice. The Bruins allowed just six Boilermaker points in the second; UCLA was up 44-19 at the break.
The Bruins scored 19 points on 57 percent shooting from the field to finish the third quarter up 63-32. Betts scored on her first field goal attempt of the game in the third quarter and continued to play through double and triple teams to finish the quarter with eight points, two rebounds, and an assist. Rice ended the third quarter with five points on perfect shooting, and Barker scored four points. The Bruins' defense continued to be dominant in the third quarter, holding the Boilermakers to only 13 points.
UCLA finished the game strong, outscoring Purdue 20-17 in the fourth quarter. Gardiner scored nine of her 16 points in the fourth, lacing three 3-pointers in the frame. Betts added five points alongside three rebounds. Dugalić, Barker, and freshman Kendall Dudley also scored in the final ten minutes. The Bruins stayed firm on the defensive end in the fourth, forcing six Purdue turnovers and outrebounding the Boilermakers 21-9.
