CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas โ The UCLA baseball team suffered its first defeat of the season, falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-3, in the opening game of the Kleberg Bank College Classic on Friday afternoon at Whataburger Field.

The Bruins (4-1) trailed by one run and loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth inning, but couldn't deliver the crucial hit, allowing the Islanders (1-4) to escape with the win.

UCLA recorded a season-low five hits in the contest.

The Bruins tied the game at 2-2 following a two-run fifth, however, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi answered with two runs in the home half to take a lead that it would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.

Phoenix Call led the UCLA offense, scoring two runs in his 1-for-3 day at the plate. Jarrod Hocking also went 1-for-3 and scored a run, while Roch Cholowsky, Cameron Kim, and Cashel Dugger each contributed a base knock.

Cody Delvecchio racked up a career-high seven strikeouts after logging 4.2 innings in his second start of the year. The right hander was tabbed with the loss after surrendering four earned runs.

The Islanders immediately replied in the home half of the inning, using a two-out, two-RBI double from Austin Russell to restore their lead. This brought an end to Delvecchio's day and Luke Rodriguez was the next hurler to toe the rubber for UCLA.

Levu hit a hard ground ball to the second baseman, who bobbled it, allowing everyone to reach safely.
Despite this opportunity, the Bruins could not capitalize in their final at-bat, and the hosts escaped with a narrow win
The Bruins will face Washington State tomorrow at 12 p.m. PT (2 p.m. CT) to continue the Kleberg Bank College Classic. Ian May will take the mound for UCLA.
