No. 5 Softball Opens Season with Two Mercy-Rule Victories

February 07, 2025 | Softball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The No. 5 UCLA softball team opened the 2025 season with a pair of mercy-rule victories over IU Indianapolis at Easton Stadium Friday evening. The Bruins won by scores of 8-0 (6 inn.) and 9-0 (5 inn.) in the double-header sweep.
ย
Game One โ€“ UCLA 8, IU Indianapolis 0 (6 inn.)
Junior pitcher Taylor Tinsley dominated in her game-one outing with 5.0 innings of one-hit ball. Tinsley tied a UCLA opening day record with 14 strikeouts against the 18 batters she faced, matching UCLA Athletic Hall of Famer Debbie Doom's mark set in 1983.
ย
Tinsley was extremely efficient in her first win of the season, throwing 54 strikes and just seven balls. She struck out the side twice and recorded two other three-strikeout innings.
ย
The Bruins' (2-0) bats were held to just one hit through the first three innings. Graduate infielder Seneca Curo, playing in her sixth opening day, recorded UCLA's first home run of the year and first of four blasts in game one with a two-run shot in the fourth inning.
ย
UCLA erupted for five runs in the fifth with two home runs from freshman Rylee Slimp and junior Megan Grant. Slimp's blast, which was the first hit of her career, plated two runs. Grant's homer was a three-run towering shot into the upper canopy of the right field trees, extending the lead to 7-0.
ย
Freshman catcher Sofia Mujica went 3-for-3 in her collegiate debut. She capped her perfect night with a line-drive home run over the left field fence in the sixth inning to walk off in run-rule fashion. In total, four freshmen were penciled into UCLA head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez's opening day lineup card, marking the most for the team since the 2004 season.
ย
Also recording her first hit in a UCLA uniform in game one was graduate transfer Jessica Clements who started the game in center field.
ย
Jaguars (0-2) starting pitcher Clara Phariss allowed all eight earned runs in the loss. Shortstop Morgan Gilbert and left fielder Paige Mcphearson recorded IU Indy's only base hits of the game.
ย
Game Two โ€“ UCLA 9, IU Indianapolis 0 (5 inn.)
UCLA scattered nine runs in the first two innings to cruise to its second win of opening day.
ย
The Bruins jumped Jaguars' starting pitcher Alexa Holman for five runs and six hits, including four straight knocks to begin the game. Clements and utility Savannah Pola led off with a single and double, respectively, and were driven home by Jordan Woolery on single into center field.
ย
Two batters later, shortstop Aleena Garcia logged her first career hit and RBI with a single into left to push the Bruins' lead to 3-0. Slimp's production flooded into game two with a single into center that scored two.
ย
Pola opened the second inning with a triple to right field for her second extra-base hit of the night. Three pitches later, Woolery drove Pola in on a double for her third RBI of the game. Grant followed Woolery in the lineup with an RBI single past the IU Indy first baseman to stretch the lead to 7-0.
ย
Later in the second, pitcher Kaitlyn Terry helped herself by recording the first hit and two RBI of her collegiate career on a single into right to put the game in mercy-rule territory at 9-0.
ย
Terry was just as solid in the circle with seven strikeouts and just one hit and one walk allowed in her first tune-up of 2025. The reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year retired the side in order twice.
ย
Next Up
The Bruins will play two games at the Mark Campbell Invitational hosted at Bill Barber Park in Irvine, Calif. on Saturday. Game one versus Nevada is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (PT). UCLA will square off with Lehigh at approximately 6 p.m.
