Bigun Picks Up Big Ten Freshman of the Week Honor

ROSEMONT, Ill. โ Kaylan Bigun of the UCLA men's tennis team was named Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week Wednesday, the conference announced. The honor was presented for the week of March 5-12, which coincided with the Bruins' unblemished opening week of league matches.
Bigun registered a 2-0 singles record while going 1-0 in doubles play to help UCLA post 7-0 wins versus Indiana (March 7) and Purdue (March 9). A UCLA team had not posted back-to-back 7-0 victories since 2018.
In each match, Bigun on Court 2 was first to finish in singles play. He beat Indiana's Jip van Assendelft 6-3, 6-3 in the opener, then handed Juan David Velasquez of Purdue a 6-3, 6-3 defeat to complete his unbeaten week.
Bigun and fellow freshman Rudy Quan knocked off the pair of Braeden Gelletich and Karan Raghavendra by a 6-3 count on Court 3 to get doubles action started against Indiana.
Bigun's weekly award is UCLA's fourth this season. Quan previously collected Freshman of the Week accolades on Feb. 26 and Jan. 22, while Spencer Johnson was tabbed Player of the Week during the fall. No other Big Ten program has more than one Freshman of the Week award this season.
