Bruins Rack Up Wins at Jim Bush Legends Meet

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The UCLA track & field team wrapped up its first home competitions with the Jim Bush Legends Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium.

The Bruins had 11 event winners and 25 top-three finishers at the meet, both of which led all competing squads. UCLA won eight of 16 scheduled events on the women's side alone. The Bruins also had three winners and 12 top-three finishers, the latter tied with Cal Poly Pomona for the most at the meet.

Thrower Lyvante Su'emai had a triple for the Bruins, winning the hammer, discus, and shot put over the course of the weekend.

UCLA is next in action at the 97th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays presented by Truist, which will take place from March 26-29 in Austin, Texas.

TRACK EVENTS RECAP

Sydney Johnson was UCLA's top performer in the 100m hurdles, finishing runner-up with a time of 14.09. Mia Holden finished just behind her, at 14.26, to finish third. Davis Davis-Lyric was UCLA's top finisher on the men's side, taking fifth at 14.79. Ollie Thorner won his heat with a time of 15.36.

In the women's 400m, Kaylen Fletcher set a PR at 54.75 en route to an event win. On the men's side, John Robinson IV turned in a lifetime best of 46.74 to place runner-up.

Making his outdoor season debut, Elijah Major was able to places second in the men's 100m dash with a time of 10.55. On the women's side, Celeste Polzonetti was UCLA's top finisher at 12.17.

The Bruins were able to place 2-3 in the women's 800m, led by Kaho Cichon's PR time of 2:09.71. Just behind her in third place was Georgia Jeanneret, at 2:10.62. Tristan Amell just missed out on a top-three finish for the men, ending up fourth with a time of 1:54.14.

Major followed up later in the afternoon with a win in the 200m, finishing that race in 21.38. Valentina Fakrogha, who also competed in the high jump, was the only Bruin to run on the women's side, finishing sixth at 25.18.

UCLA closed out the afternoon with a comfortable win in the men's 4x400 relay, as the quartet of Gabriel Clement II, Robinson IV, Zaire Waring, and Di'Niko Bates ran a 3:09.53. The Bruins ran 1-2 for part of the race, but the UCLA B's (Kojo Manu, Benjamin Kirk, Davis-Lyric, Major) ended up sixth at 3:20.30. The Bruins did not compete in the women's 4x4.

FIELD EVENTS RECAP

Su'emai got the Bruins off to a strong start in the morning field events, winning the women's discus with a mark of 51.67m (169-6). Paired with her hammer win from Friday night, that gave her a double early on Saturday. Michael Pinckney gave the Bruins a sweep in the discus after winning on the men's side with a mark of 55.31m (181-5).

Fakrogha was the Bruins' top high jumper, finishing fourth on the women's side with a clearance of 1.71m (5-07.25) in her collegiate outdoor debut.

Su'emai completed her triple with the women's shot put in the afternoon. At 15.02m (49-3.5), she as the lone thrower to clear 15 meters. Derek Smith finished highest among UCLA's entries on the men's side, taking fourth with a mark of 16.22m (53-2.75).

UCLA took the top two spots in the women's pole vault, as Katerina Adamiec and Ka'Leila Abrille finished 1-2 with twin marks of 4.13m (13-6.5). Cade Sommers closed the afternoon for the Bruin men with a third-place finish in the men's pole vault at 4.68m (14-4.25).

The Bruins got one final event win on the women's side after Sydney Johnson cleared 6.14m (20-1.75) to beat out the field. Ava Kellenberg also placed third with a long jump of 5.64m (18-6). Allan Hunter was the third-place finisher in the men's long jump, with a mark of 7.57m (24-10).

Terrence Sweetman was second in a four-man triple jump field, with a mark of 14.70m (48-02.75). Including a pair of student-athletes who have exhausted outdoor eligibility and were competing unattached, UCLA had five of the top-six finishers in the women's triple jump. Jade McDonald was the top finisher who was competing for UCLA, taking fourth at 11.96m (39-3).
