Men's Tennis Records 4-1 Win Against Michigan State
April 13, 2025 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's tennis team rebounded from an early deficit Sunday to beat Michigan State 4-1 in Big Ten Conference play at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Bruins (11-8, 9-2 in Big Ten play) took control of singles play after dropping the doubles point, with Rudy Quan, Alexander Hoogmartens, Emon van Loben Sels and clincher Aadarsh Tripathi each contributing to the total in straight sets. The Spartans (14-8, 9-3) picked up the initial point after doubles play went the distance.
Teaming up for the first time in doubles play, Tripathi and Spencer Johnson twice broke the serve of Vuk Radjenovic and Danial Rakhmatullayev – including for the deciding game – en route to a 6-3 win on Court 2. The Michigan State pair of Ozan Baris and Matthew Forbes provided an answer on Court 1, delivering a 6-2 defeat to Hoogmartens and Giacomo Revelli. With all eyes on Court 3, Spartans Max Sheldon and Mitchell Sheldon broke van Loben Sels and Gianluca Ballotta for 5-4 and held to put their team on the scoreboard first.
Five singles first sets, including a 6-1 display by No. 34 Quan on Court 1, went the way of UCLA. Quan nearly duplicated his effort, ultimately knocking off ninth-ranked Ozan Baris 6-1, 6-2. The top-10 win was Quan's first as a Bruin. He has three straight-set victories in a row.
Next off his court was No. 87 van Loben Sels, who tied Johnson and Quan for the team lead with his seventh ranked singles win. The latest was a 6-2, 6-4 result over No. 94 Max Sheldon on Court 2 that also represented van Loben Sels' eighth straight positive singles decision. He also hit the 20-win mark for the season in singles play.
Hoogmartens' third consecutive singles win team-high 13th of dual-match play came in comeback fashion, as the senior overcame Radjenovic 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 on Court 4. Then, with Bruin Kaylan Bigun serving for his match on Court 3, No. 113 Tripathi clinched for the third time in 2025. The junior held off Mitchell Sheldon 6-4, 6-4 on Court 5 to seal it.
UCLA returns to action Tuesday, when it welcomes UC San Diego to LATC. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT. They Bruins then head on the road to finish out their regular season with contests at Wisconsin and Nebraska.
