No. 10 UCLA Falls in Pitchers' Duel Against No. 16 Oregon, 2-1

EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 10-ranked UCLA baseball team finished on the wrong end of a pitchers' duel, falling 2-1 in the series opener at No. 16 Oregon on Friday evening at PK Park.
UCLA (28-9, 12-4 Big Ten) received an excellent start from its freshman right-hander, Wylan Moss (1-1), but mustered just two hits in the contest. Oregon's (26-10, 13-6 Big Ten) Grayson Grinsell silenced the Bruins' offense, going the distance and picking up the complete game victory. The Ducks' left-hander racked up seven strikeouts and issued just one walk, surrendering just one run on two hits.
Moss threw five innings and allowed just one run, fanning three batters in his third weekend start of the year. The UCLA bullpen allowed just two hits and one run in the remaining three innings.
The Bruins' two-hit performance marks a season low and their fewest hits in a game since March 19, 2022.
Roch Cholowsky provided the lone run of the ballgame for the Bruins, launching his 12th home run of the campaign in the top of the seventh. Cashel Dugger was the only other Bruin to record a hit in the game.
After two straight scoreless frames to start the contest, the Ducks finally broke the deadlock when a two-out RBI base hit from Dominic Hellman gave the hosts the lead in the bottom of the third.
Moss hung back-to-back zeroes in the fourth and the fifth frames before handing the ball off to Chris Grothues in the home half of the sixth. Hellman welcomed the new pitcher with a solo shot to extend Oregon's lead to two.
In the top of the seventh, Cholowsky brought the Bruins within one when he smacked a line drive down the left-field line that just cleared the wall. This was just the second hit of the game for the UCLA offense.
UCLA was unable to manage a base runner over the last two frames and Grinsell completed his masterful outing to earn the series-opening victory for the Ducks.
The Bruins return to PK Park for the middle game of the series tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. PT. Michael Barnett is scheduled to get the start on the mound for UCLA. The game will be available to watch on B1G+.
