No. 10 UCLA Evens Series with Run-Rule Victory Over No. 16 Oregon, 14-4

April 19, 2025 | Baseball

EUGENE, Ore. -ย The No. 10-ranked UCLA baseball team picked up a dominant run-rule victory, 14-4, to even the series with No. 16 Oregon on Saturday afternoon at PK Park.

Just one day removed from its two-hit performance in the series opener, UCLA (29-9, 13-4 Big Ten) exploded for 14 runs on 12 hits to earn a convincing win over Oregon (26-11, 13-7 Big Ten).
ย
Big flies from Dean West, Roch Cholowsky, and Jarrod Hocking bolstered the offensive onslaught while Mulivai Levu delivered a standout performance with four hits on the day.
ย
Hocking mashed a three-run homer in the seventh to highlight his five-RBI showing, setting a new career-high. Cholowsky homered for the second straight contest to bring his season total to 13. UCLA's shortstop went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
ย
Levu notched his 13th multi-hit game of the year, achieving his third game this season with four or more hits.
ย
Eight of the nine UCLA starters recorded a base knock in the contest.
ย
West got the Bruins started by turning on a 3-2 offering and blasting it over the right-field wall for a leadoff home run to give his team an early 1-0 lead.
ย
Oregon answered in the home half of the inning when Mason Neville hit a leadoff homer of his own before Anson Aroz came up with a two-out RBI base hit to put his team out in front.
ย
After a scoreless second and third frame, UCLA rallied for a pair of runs in the fourth to regain its advantage. Levu and Martin set the table with base hits, then AJ Salgado was plunked to load the bases. Hocking capitalized on the opportunity by reaching on a fielder's choice after beating out a double play ball, then Martin scampered home on a wild pitch.
ย
In the bottom of the fifth, Jacob Walsh tied the game with a solo homer. This chased starting pitcher Michael Barnett out of the game and Head Coach John Savage turned to the left-hander, Ian May.
ย
In the top of the sixth inning, the Bruins pushed a run across when Hocking executed a well-placed sacrifice bunt. His hustle down the line pressured the pitcher into making a hurried throw to first base, which resulted in an errant throw that allowed the go-ahead run to come around to score.
ย
In the bottom half, May recorded an important punch out with a runner in scoring position to preserve the Bruins' one-run lead.
ย
UCLA continued to add to its lead in the seventh, rallying for four runs to break the game open. Cholowsky started the inning off with a bang, clobbering a no-doubt homer off the scoreboard in left-center field. Levu collected his third base hit of the contest before Salgado walked, bringing Hocking to the plate with runners on first and second with two outs. Hocking delivered in the crucial moment, punishing a 3-1 fastball by parking it over the left-center field wall for a three-run blast, extending the Bruins' lead to five.
ย
Oregon got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Walsh hit his second home run of the game, cutting the deficit to four.
ย
Cholowsky did more damage in the eighth, ripping a double down the line with the bases loaded to plate two Bruins and serve as a catalyst to UCLA's six-run inning. Hits from Cashel Dugger, Levu, and Blake Balsz helped fuel the rally and the Bruins took a 10-run lead into the bottom of the frame.
ย
May (6-2) earned the win for UCLA after tossing two innings and surrendering just one run. Easton Hawk came on to get the last four outs. The freshman right-hander held the Ducks scoreless in his 1.1 innings of work.
ย
The Bruins return to PK Park for the series finale tomorrow at 2 p.m. PT. Landon Stump is scheduled to get the start on the mound for UCLA. The game will be available to watch on Big Ten Network.
