Cholowsky Named Brooks Wallace Award Player of the Week

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. โ The College Baseball Foundation announced the winners of their weekly awards on Tuesday afternoon. UCLA's Roch Cholowsky was honored with the Brooks Wallace Award Player of the Week, which recognizes the nation's most outstanding shortstop.

Cholowsky was on fire both at the plate and in the field, powering the Bruins to a 3-1 record last week, highlighted by a sweep of Penn State. He went 7-for-15 (.466) with six RBIs, five runs scored, and three home runs. Cholowsky also reached base twice after being hit by a pitch, once via a walk, and registered a stolen base. The sophomore hit a home run in each of the Bruins' wins over Penn State last weekend, raising his season batting average to .373 and increasing his home run and RBI totals to 16 and 51, respectively. Cholowsky was flawless in the field, handling 20 chances without an error while helping turn two double plays. His season fielding percentage now stands at .986.

According to data compiled by 643 Charts, Cholowsky leads the nation in wins-above-replacement (WAR) with a mark of 4.79. He ranks second nationally in both defensive WAR (1.03) and defensive runs saved (13.77), remaining error-free since February.

UCLA's shortstop also leads the Big Ten Conference in OPS at 1.284 and tops his team in home runs with 16.

No. 14 UCLA (32-11, 16-5 B1G) begins its eight-game road trip tomorrow night (6 p.m.) at LMU. Then, the Bruins gear up for the first Big Ten edition of the crosstown series at USC which begins on Friday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Great Park in Irvine, Calif.
