No. 10 UCLA Dominates Long Beach State in Run-Rule Victory, 12-1

LOS ANGELES -ย The No. 10-ranked UCLA baseball team picked up its fourth victory via the run-rule this season with a 12-1 win over Long Beach State on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

UCLA (26-6, 10-2 Big Ten) scored four runs in the sixth inning to extend its margin to 11 runs, activating the 10-run mercy rule in the seventh. Cal Randall and August Souza combined to get the last three outs in the final frame, sending the fans home after just seven innings.

All nine starters recorded a hit in the contest, which marks the second time this season the Bruins have accomplished this feat. The UCLA offense was bolstered by Jarrod Hocking's two-run homer in the second inning and Blake Balsz's two-hit day at the plate.

Ian May made his second straight Tuesday start on the mound and was untouchable, tossing three perfect innings while striking out four batters.

The Bruins are now winners of 19 of their last 22 contests and improve to 16-4 in nonconference play.

Hocking blasted a towering two-run homer to left-center field in the bottom of the second to give UCLA an early lead. This was the second long ball of the season for the UCLA outfielder.

The Bruins extended its advantage in its next trip to the plate, posting a four-spot when Dean West and Mulivai Levu led off the inning with a pair of base hits before Roman Martin, AJ Salgado, and Balsz strung together three consecutive RBI doubles.

UCLA's pitching staff was lights out to start the contest, retiring 11 straight batters before Armando Briseno's solo home run in the top of the fourth. May was excellent in his three innings of work, setting down all nine hitters he faced while striking out four.

In the bottom of the fifth, UCLA tacked on two runs without recording a hit. Martin was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame then Balsz followed by drawing a free pass. Hocking ripped a grounder that was too hot to handle for the Long Beach State third baseman, allowing Martin to score. Hocking later scored on a wild pitch to make it a seven-run lead.

The Bruins' lead ascended into double digits in the bottom of the sixth when Balsz and Hocking drew back-to-back bases loaded walks before Cashel Dugger came up with a base hit to drive in two more runs.

Randall got the first two outs of the ninth before a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for the Dirtbags. Souza was called upon to get the final out and he did just that, punching out the last batter of the game looking to clinch the mercy rule victory for UCLA.
