Big Fourth Inning Keys No. 18 UCLA's 9-1 Win at Illinois
May 10, 2025 | Baseball
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. โ A six-run fourth inning keyed the No. 18 UCLA baseball team's 9-1 victory against Illinois Saturday evening at Illinois Field. The win represented head coach John Savage's 800th of his 24-year career.
Mulivai Levu (3 for 5, three RBIs) and AJ Salgado (4 for 5, two RBIs) of UCLA (36-14, 19-7 Big Ten) were offensive catalysts, combining for seven hits and five runs batted in. Phoenix Call and Roch Cholowsky each drove in a pair. Each Bruin batter reached base and seven came around to score at least once.
UCLA's Michael Barnett (9-1) gave up just one first-inning run across six innings, scattering seven hits. He struck out three and walked two. Jack O'Connor and August Souza backed up Barnett, holding the Fighting Illini (27-21, 12-14) hitless over the final three innings. Souza fanned three in his two innings of work.
Regan Hall (6-4) of Illinois gave up eight earned runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings. Cameron Chee-Aloy and Nick Groves had two hits apiece for the Fighting Illini.
Dean West led off the game with a walk and was quickly moved into scoring position when Cholowsky grounded out. Levu then sent a groundball though the right side of the infield to get scoring started. Illinois answered in the bottom half, though, also cashing in a leadoff baserunner. A couple singles put Groves on third base and the Bruins surrendered the tying run on a double-play ball.
A second-inning Illinois rally was stopped by Barnett, who stranded a pair of Fighting Illini baserunners to bring the Bruins bats back to the plate. It was in the third that UCLA took the lead for good and Cholowsky was responsible, driving a two-strike pitch over the left-field fence for his 17th home run of the season.

A dozen Bruins batted in the fourth, breaking things open. Six runs were scored on five hits and four hit batsmen. Call and Levu registered two-run singles and Salgado drove Levu home with his second base hit of the inning. Cholowsky's sacrifice fly brought the sixth run in.
Levu and Salgado teamed once more to get a run home in the sixth, as Salgado logged his fourth consecutive single โ and third straight of the run-scoring variety.
UCLA will try for a series sweep Sunday at 10 a.m. PT. B1G+ will provide live coverage of the Bruins' final regular-season road game.
